So I'm ok with the usual 4/4 and a few of the simple ones but it's the irregular time signatures that fry my brain. In particular Badly Drawn Boy songs such as The Shining or Once Around The Block

Does anyone know what this time signature is and/or have any good resources on calculating them?

That's just in 4/4. It's throwing you b/c the low strings are syncopated. See my sig.

Just trying to understand the rhythm and noticing when a new measure starts, tapping the beat along with the song will help

You basically have this rhythm here in your example

It's just that the bass notes are (accentuated) in-between beats
