How do you go about recording synths with that really dense, neo-psychelic sound like Animal Collective / MGMT, without making it sound like 80's glam music?

Look up the TAL-UNO 62 or something like that. It's a free (there's a paid version too) synth that models the Juno-60 perfectly, the keyboard AC use for their bass.

A lot of not having it sound like 80s buttrock will be in chord voicings as much as it is in the patches. Take your time crafting the right sounds as you experiment with loops.

Also, super wet drippy spring reverb on vocals/samples.
