Have sex with them, but do it badly. They'll leave you alone then.

Get them to bring more people to gigs.
And no, Guitar Hero will not help. Even on expert. Really.

You play in a Muse cover band. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

You are very unlikely to meet an obsessive fan. Realistically, a girl isn't gonna hear your music and suddenly fancy you, especially as you're not famous. To put it very bluntly, even if you play a style of music targeted at girls (Post-hardcore, pop-punk, etc), I'm willing to bet that you don't have the sex appeal to get the girls screaming for you all, and if you do, then you'll quickly be big enough that your bodyguards would deal with the most obsessive ones. It's like "We're gonna get so many girls playing our brand of happy, inoffensive Pop-Punk!" "Nah, your drummer's overweight and your singer looks like a moose ". Realistically, you're not going to have to deal with obsessive fans, and if you do, it'll be more a case by case basis, but if you really want advice, I'd always follow these basic rules;

  • Treat everyone as your equal. You just played a gig to your friends, random people there for a night out and people in other bands, you're not Jesus.
  • Don't expect to have obsessive fans, the Rockstar lifestyle is dead, and good riddance!
  • Don't take your top off to impress would-be obsessive fans. I've seen many bands do this, it always looks stupid if your band isn't Ensiferum.
  • Once again, treat others as your equal. Make time and respect even the most obsessive fan.

I think you're confusing "obsessive fan" with "groupies".

The possibility of "groupies" is very realistic. Perhaps not to the pick them out of the audience from the stage level of bigger bands, but if you're good it's not uncommon for a girl to approach you after a gig and ask you to join her.

let's rephrase...let's pretend we're all in a big time band and we are all the top dog in said band, how do you deal with the crazy fans?

I love the Pootytang example

I vaguely remember you saying your girlfriend is the lead singer of your band, so going all Harry Styles and rounding up a gang of attractive girls to take to your bedroom is out of the question, so it'd be more the mad ones get dealt with by security, and the less mad obsessive ones you give autographs to and be nice to gain a good reputation. If you look at bigger bands who have these kind of fans, you can see that, for instance, Amy Lee is really nice to fans, and has a great reputation with fans, whereas Simone Simons has perhaps been a bit colder towards her fanbase, to put it kindly, and her reputation isn't the best, to put it bluntly. But yeah, seeing as you specified 'crazy fans', I'd say that the security are going to deal with all that.

yes, for me I won't have the option to take random chicks back to my room...I mean I do but I'd rather not haha. Anyways, I guess my best option would be the approach you gave about being nice/treating everyone with respect but also keeping guards when necessary. Another one would be wear a mask during all performances n interviews with a pseudonym :P:
