Pornography isn't be the only thing David Cameron plans to block online...

#1
This article has uncovered some more info about Cameron's plan to protect little Timmy from naughty things on the internet. This is what TalkTalk apparently have in place at the moment:

Those are all ticked by default.

This is just a way of trying to censor the internet completely and hes doing a very unsubtle job about it. Parents can easily impose a censorship function on games consoles and PCs so that cant be the reason. Bit worrying to know that the program is also being run by a Chinese company and they aren't exactly soft on blocking websites.

Yeah I think the Chinese company that make the thing is affiliated with the Chinese government.

The 'Homesafe' thing for TalkTalk is a special program that you have to download separately, it's not a default.

He's a Tory, this surprises no-one.

That whole "vote of no confidence" thing isn't very useful if you blokes never use it.

Kids are growing up more tech savvy than the government can ever hope to be. A sizable majority will know how to bypass these blocks with VPNs, DNS variations and proxies. Then they will tell their friends. Pointless waste of time.

This is something the government and all these others don't seem to understand. People find bypasses/hacks to get round all these blocks on websites and DRM on games in a matter of hours/days. They are fighting a battle they cannot win but they still continue to try.

I'm pretty sure all Chinese companies are affiliated with the Chinese Gov't. It's not like it's an option...

Games? Well shit

They aren't including games in this (as far as I'm aware) but I was just saying that all these measures to prevent things online hasn't worked so far including attempted game piracy deterents

What I'm confused about is why the government is even doing this. It doesn't solve any problems - it'll just lose the a lot of votes. Given that the tories only got in this time by ponying up with the Lib Dems I don't see how they expect to get in next election now that nobody's going to vote for Lib Dem again and all of the Lib Dem voters will move over to Labour.

They seem to have misconstrued the terms "running the country" and "controlling what we are allowed and not allowed to see".

No no no. Tories simply add the suffix 'into the ground'.

I think when the cost of paying the ISPs to implement and maintain this level of censorship comes to light will be the exact moment when everyone sacks it off as a bad job.

I saw a huffington post article about all this and it seems most people are in favor of cameron's plan.

The fact that huffington post readers support it is enough reason alone for me to oppose it.

As has been said I don't see this getting anywhere when costs are made public.

'Us blokes'? Only MPs are capable of bringing a vote of no confidence, and it would take a hell of a lot to get them to consider it in this day and age.

I really don't understand why the government would ban large portions of the internet. Seriously it's the parent's responsibility to watch their children. This is a massive breach of personal freedom.

FFS normalised ignorance wins again.

they still haven't made it explicitly clear how they are planning to filter the results. are they going to use keyword filters? Blacklisted sites? if the latter, what about wikipedia? Are they going to go through each entry and block each potentially questionable article? What if it links to one that is questionable? What if it links to an intermediary page that links to a questionable article?

It's hard to imagine how this could work at all.
