Hello lads,

I'm not gigging anymore and I don't want this enormous amp in my room anymore either so I'm going to downsize.

Budget: $700ish

What I want:

2 channels (or at least foot-switchable gain stage or something)
Low wattage (nothing over 20)
All tube
An EQ
Super clean cleans
Don't mind so much about the dirt - I can always use pedals. As long as it has a bit of grit and a gain stage
An effects loop and takes pedals well
Reverb might be nice but not necessary

I'd essentially like a 1x12 and a head (purely for aesthetic reasons) but a combo works too.

Any ideas?

Thanks dudes!

I want to suggest a Roland Jazz Chorus, but that goes over your wattage. But then again wattage doesn't equal volume. You can get them in head form if you were set on that.

A "tubescreamer" is a person paid by a guitarist to stand behind the amp and scream at the tubes. This terrifies the tubes into overdriving and delivers a thick, harmonic-rich tone.

If you want very clean cleans, you're going to want something with some headroom...

The Ampeg GVT series has pretty clean (and nice!) cleans indeed.

The GVT15 though, which they make both in combo and head form has only one channel.

The GVT52 instead, 1x12 or 2x12 combo, is a 50w switchable to 25w, 2 channels with separate EQ, reverb equipped, reeeeally nice clean sounding amp.

The second channel is crunchy, and that doesn't sound bad too indeed, but the clean is better if you ask me.
Name's Luca.

Clue: amplifiers amplify so don't turn it on if you need quiet.

Less than 20 watts and super clean cleans is a strange request.

Yeah I realised that after I posted it...

What I mean is it's going to be clean no matter what really unless I jam with a mate because I won't go past 3-4 on the volume at home.

So from 0-4 volume I want super nice cleans.

I don't mind if it doesn't have a ton of headroom because it likely won't be cranked more than once or twice a year

Fender HRD or Peavey Classic 30. Could save some $$ and go with a Fender Blues Jr but no effects loop. The H&K Tubemeister is a great suggestion too.

^ I was also going to suggest an HRD initially, but the FX loop throws out a lot of good clean amps in the budget.

Would you mind listing some of the amps you were thinking without the loop?

I can live with it if the amp is worth it

Buy an old Fender Twin, the older the better. Twins don't need no stinking FX loop.

Oops, you're an Aussie so you aren't going to find an old Twin within your budget. Sorry about that.

i know you are from Australia, so i can't keep tabs on every country changes with how expensive things are.

is Egnater availably? a rebel 30 could be alright, but may get dirty a little faster.

tubemeister isn't bad.

+1 classic 30
+1 Blues Jr.
+1HRD.

go to a music store and play what you like.

what type of cleans are you looking for? fenderish?

No way he'll find a Rebel within budget. A used Peavey Classic 30 on the other hand would be doable, so would a used HRD.

Classic 30's are good.

So are HRD's but the OD channel is unusable imo so you would have to use a pedal for OD.

It's one channel but you are playing it at home so just use pedals and/or guitar volume control (or a pad or volume pedal or w/e)

You may be able to find a used Fender Blues Junior for that too.

That's what I run my 18W'er through. You've heard that, it sounds great. I'd like a 4x12 loaded with them.
