Let there be...guitar porn!

Not many issues with this one- literally just some hardware that could use a cleaning and a couple of dings like this:

But this baby is in great condition otherwise.

Its a Fernandes Ravelle Goldtop Limited, my second Ravelle. From what I understand, only about 72 of these were made. As you can see from the photos, its a nice warm gold with just a hint of metal flake for sparkle.

It has a thick, solid contoured mahogany body and set neck, a maple top, and a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard. There's a Seymour Duncan JB humbucker in bridge and a Seymour Duncan '59 humbucker in neck- one of my favorite SD pickups. Anyone who has played with a JB or '59 in a mahogany bodied guitar knows what this means: lots of beefy rock tones perfect for heavier classic rock, but also some nice creamy cleans if you play with your tone knob.

The Ravelle is obviously evolved from the venerable Les Paul design, and as such, shares some of its characteristics. For instance, its heavy, but that mass turns into an eternity of sustain. I only have one guitar that beats it: my other Ravelle...but it cheats, because it is an Elite with a Sustainer pickup!

Unlike LPs, though, Ravelle necks are on the skinnier side. Too bad I'm no shredder! Still, it is quite comfy to play on.

Like I said, this is my second Fernandes Ravelle, and I love them. Great guitars! In fact, I'm looking at getting a third one- the SHIN Koi version. But that will have to wait a bit. I have some other beauties in my sight...

You can't go wrong with a JB/59 combo in a maho guitar. I love em for metal too.

That shape is ultra-sexy..would buy.

Anyway, thanks for all the compliments. Although most of my guitars are natural or traditional colors, this is my second gold guitar this year. The other was a Reverend Flatroc...and but for someone beating me to the punch, I'd have been looking forward to another goldie later this year- a used Reverend Manta Ray HB that looked to be in excellent shape.

Maybe I'm becoming a golden axe junkie.

Very nice. I think I'm getting away from the conventional LP and SG shapes, because they look great but don't feel comfortable to me. A modified LP-shaped guitar is more interesting.

Still, other things on the GAS list! I did discover that Fernandes has some MIJ telecasters they make. Time to expand the gas list yet again...

Anyway, great find! I have a JB/59 set in my Viper 1000, sounds very nice.

One thing about Fernandes in general: they tend towards hotter pickups, so if you're looking for a traditional Strat or Tele sound, there may only be 1-2 models out of all their guitars that would actually deliver it.

For instance, if you look at the Retrorockets, they're clearly based on Strats...but some have stacked Hot Rails, some have EMGs. Only a couple have traditional single coils.

So check the specs on those MiJ Fernandes Teles very carefully!

Been looking at the TE-2, actually. It looks pretty traditional, but it'll have to compete on my gas list with G&L Tribute and Peavey, haha.

Damn you, Danny!

Very tempting color. I have a feeling that lurking sites like ebay would produce even better deals, although that is a beautiful telecaster.

That black tuxedo TE-2 on ebay is competing hard with this Asat as my new favorite GAS tele.

Well, that's not entirely true. I see it every once in a while. I keep putting it in a "safe place", then I forget where I stashed it.

Thanks!

Actually, there isn't one where I live, either. The Ravelle is one of my "dream guitars": like the Dean Cadillac (my first electric), it is one that captured my mind as soon as I saw some of my favorite guitarists playing it. So I didn't let the lack of availability hinder my acquisition.

The Ravelle Elite was a birthday present I paid half of the price. My parents gave me the rest AND ordered it via the military's Online Exchange. That meant zero tax.

This Goldtop was an eBay purchase- my second ever. I was surprised to get so lucky to find it available AND have the $$$.

Like the saying goes, different strokes for different folks.

That's why there has been the explosion in different body types over the years. Not everyone likes or feels comfy playing the same stuff. Hell- I love the look of V's and some other "pointy" guitars, but I find them uncomfortable to play. As much as I'd love to have one- I have a couple in mind- any V I would own would essentially be a wall-hanger.

Thanks for being happy for my happiness.

I saw in a couple of pictures that on Bucketheads Les Paul (only some pictures) that his neck pickup is painted in white. Can anyone explain to me why he would do this, and if there are any pros and cons.

I can be vocal about what I like, I know!

Fernandes is now one of the 4 brands from which I have multiple guitars...and the only one of those in which I have only one model.

But don't fret ( ), I have a few more Revs in my crosshairs!

Funny thing: the guy I bought this Ravelle from included a CD of his music. I haven't had a chance to listen to it, but guess what?

The inside sleeve art shows him playing a Rev. (I think its a Reeves Gabrels sig 2.)

I figured this much. I thought I had a couple guitars in the works then I fell in like with a sienna burst fender strat. What's worse is I'm not even a strat guy. Hopefully a rev will pop up and catch my eye.

Would you say Reverend necks are beefier than, say, Epiphone SG necks? I don't know what the neck on my Epi is, exactly, but it's pretty beefy and definitely not one of the "slim" Epiphone neck profiles.

I ask because my only definite requirements for my next guitar are:

1) TOM bridge or Bigsby
2) No baseball bat necks

:P
#35
Rev necks are not slim in any way, but they also aren't baseball bats. They are- AFAIK- all medium ovals (C). I would say they're beefier than anything a guitar maker would call "slim". That would include those Epi SGs.

Compared to my other guitars, I do have fatter necked axes (some of my JKGs, for sure) and skinner ones (the Caddy and the Ravelles). So if you're looking for a middle of the pack size, Revs should satisfy.
