Hey guys, I'm considering picking up a new Peavey Triple XXX II head, but am looking for a cabinet to pair. I noticed peavey only makes 4x12's these days and I feel as if I could make do with a higher rated 2x12. The only one I've found that looks good would be the PRS SESPKR-2. I know the 4x12 would be much safer since they're rated so much higher but space is an issue. If I HAVE to get a 412 I will, but I'd prefer a 2x12. Does anyone know of any 212s rated for 120 watts (120w head) or higher ?

Thanks guys !

I'd go used depending on condition. Budget is probably 600 new. Might be lenient depending on whats on the table. I'm in Alberta, Canada.

I'm not sure how close you are to the border or if you'd be willing to drive across, but even if not, your budget should be ample to get a great 212 used.

Look for the usual suspects - Mesa 212, Orange PPC212, Marshall 1936V.

Just remember the XXXII is the old JSX with a new face plate. You can get the JSX for $500-$600 all-day.

A used Mesa Recto cab works really well with them and can be found for $400 all the time

Wow thanks Robbgnarly for the info. I wasn't really butthurt over having to drop 1200 on a head but if I can get the same thing with a different look for half price I'd definitely do it. I can mod the appearance myself if it made me eye sore anyways !

Thanks for the info everyone !

Yeah peavey is the king of re-naming
5150 is now the 6505
XXX is now the 3120
JSX is now the XXX II

The JSX has the exact same circuitry as the XXXII , I think the control layout is the same also.

I've been reading posts stating that all morning.

While I have some attention too.

I was originally looking at the EVH 5150 III 50W, then came across the XXX II, now the JSX.

Ultimately I'm looking for something that I can rip the classics with, get a beautiful clean, and then something to deliver a savage tone when I'm in a metal mood. Sort of a do it all amp. Something in the >1500 range (head only) Any ideas ?

You could try to find a Laney GH50. They're a little less gainy than the XXX/JSX amps but I prefer them if you need cleans and classic rock primarily with metal on the side. You can probably find them for around 500 bones.

FWIW I got an original XXX used for $375. Love the thing to death but it has way too much gain for classic rock. I run the crunch channel with the gain at 1 to get my br00tz tones!

^ To add on to the mesa options, you could try to find older models like the F series, the Nomad or the Studio series. Much cheaper than the mainstream Mesa models but they still sound wicked.

I must have worded my post wrong.

Literally what I play for classics are Van Halen, Boston, Queen, and some Triumph. I'm more into metal than I am anything else, which is why I like the EVH 5150 III 50W. You get a nice clean, pretty good crunch, and can make it sick for metal. I was just wondering what my other options were for that.

I'll check out the old mesa's though !

Splawn Quick Rod might be worth looking at, and the full sized 5150 III is only $1100ish used
