Budget? - 500usd~flexible

Favorite Artists? - A lot, going for a mid 90s grunge/post-grunge sound (Think early Weezer) That can maybe push into metal territory

Preferences? - Must be able to play live shows without help from a PA system. Prefer a cab+head setup that I can upgrade in the future, no combo amps.

New or Used? - Used preferred, and most likely required.

Location? - Notre Dame, IN

Current Gear? - An Agile guitar, and a GFS floor tuner.

My budget is flexible, but trying to keep it relatively cheap. Looking to get back into playing live again, but my Roland Micro Cube won't cut it. I've considered looking for a cheap 1x12 or 2x12. Like, really cheap, and then picking up a decent 50w head. Looking for suggestions on where I should go. Tube or solid state is fine. I've heard of people getting good deals on jcm800/900s before, but I'm not sure where to look.

Any help is greatly appreciated. If you have questions, just ask

You're going to need to raise your budget to get a good cab + head setup.

If you really really squeeze your budget, for a cab, look for something like a Carvin Legacy 212 (should have V30s) or a Line 6 Spider Valve 412 or a Line 6 Vetta II 412.

For a head, look for a Peavey Ultra or Ultra Plus head.

Together those should run you $500-600. All used of course.

The Peavey VTM might also be up your alley, check them out. Definitely less versatile/more vintage than an Ultra though.
Spin 'round carousel when your horse isn't screwed in.

That's why I said my budget was flexible....

I've considered the peavey ultra. Problem is, finding one used that isn't expensive

Anybody have any experience with the Randall RT50H? I found an used one in my area with a 1x12 blackstar cab for under 500. Not sure if it's a one trick pony(metal only) or not.

They run $250 all the time at www.guitarcenter.com/usedgear

You will find a combo easier than a head and cab with your budget, you do realize that right?

The RT50h is geared twards hard-rock/metal

Here's an Ultra Plus for $300.

No pic, but just call and ask any questions you have about it.

Search their used gear every few days - it changes often due to the fact that you can shop from all of their stores in the US simultaneously and have it shipped anywhere for a flat rate (like $5 for pedals/small stuff, $25 for heads, $45 for cabs, that's about what I've seen, and that's all very fair compared to eBay shipping prices).

They have an Ultra+ head for $299 right now and 3 Marshall 1960 cabs for $199-$299 right now

EDIT: They also have a VTM head for $299 if your looking for a more HR Marshall tone

The Peavey Valveking might be worth looking into also

Thought about the VK. Any clips of the ultra+ doing punk all the way to metal?

It can do Punk to metal better than the VK can

The JSX/XXX/3120 were all designed based on the Ultra platform if that gives you an idea of sound. Look up some videos on you tube.
