I'm deciding to get active pickups cause i have a 5150 amp, and quite frankly they sound great out of one.

Gibson Les Paul studio lite $600- http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/ank/msg/4083585479.html

Jackson SLSMG w/ emg 81/85's $600- http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/msg/4025062421.html

Im thinkin the jackson...how about you guys? I would get a guitar with passives, but i would want a marshall to play that on or something

Out of those 2 I would choose the Jackson, but that's just me..

I'm guessing you play metal, but any other genre you're going for? other than that if you can, bring your amp with you to try them out and see what works best! those are two pretty different guitars!

The Jackson is wildly overpriced, you can snag these for $350-400 pretty easy. Sometimes cheaper yet http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_sacat=0&_from=R40&_nkw=Jackson+SLSMG&LH_Complete=1&LH_Sold=1&rt=nc

The Les Paul Studio Lite was a well-received instrument, but their price has jumped around quite a bit. I remember seeing these sell for around $800 pretty regularly a few years ago, now you can get them for around $500. The LP is a much better deal, but I think you can do a lot better with a $600 budget.

EDIT: If you look around you can find Les Paul Studios with EMGS for around $650 used, and occasionally a SG Standard will drop for around there. There's plenty of Faded Flying V's and SG's floating around with EMGS as well. The 2002 and most of 2003 Faded Gibsons had an ebony fretboard, the Standards didn't even have that at the time. The Faded Flying V is identical to it's Standard counterpart except for the finish itself btw, I think the SG is the same way but I'm not positive.

There are various Ibanez models in that price range that would suit you, my friend had one of the neckthru RGT Prestiges that he picked up for $650. If you wanted to save a bit the LTD 1000 Series are very well built instruments, definitely give these a look before you decide on anything.

That Gibson is the ugliest guitar I have ever seen, no disrespect intended and obviously you're buying based on sound but god damn that is ugly (imo)

You overlooked that it has been upgraded with active EMG's compared to the ones on ebay that have the stock HZ's in them. Plus it comes with a hard case.

I did miss that, thanks for pointing it out. There's a couple with legitmate EMG pickups in them that sold for $400 or so though, personally I wouldn't pay $300ish extra for EMG's and a hardcase.

EDIT: What's your reasoning for limiting yourself to active pickups or EMG's only? There's quite a few passive ones out there that are just as brutal (if not more) than active designs. Bareknuckle has a few models, Gibson's 500T is very aggressive, Bill Lawrence 500XL, the list keeps going.

I have a feeling the neck will kind of be the factor. Thick or thin. I have owned some mij Jacksons and own seven Gibsons. Then i own three ibanez prestiges. I use the ibanez for melodic death type and intricate lead work. I can play most of it on a 50's neck, but it's more fatiguing. If its blues it an lp.

I would probably prefer a Gibson, but it just seemed like the Jackson was a pretty good deal at the time. I play a lot of heavy melodic stuff (devin townsend, Baroness, smashing pumpkins) but i play a lot of thrashy stuff too (slayer, decapitated, suffocation)

I was looking at a lot of gibson SG's and Les paul's but I'm sure that I would want to upgrade the pickups so I was kinda looking for something that had everything I wanted in one.

You can always buy new pickups for a guitar. That said, I think most standard Gibson pickups do metal arguably well, so you could try it out and if it isn't what you want, I reckon there are loads of EMG's being bought and sold on the second hand market. Shouldn't be too hard to find a set if you wanted one.

Keep on the lookout for stuff on eBay, modded guitars usually bring less and you can find almost anything with EMG's in it at some point. There's been a couple Gibson SG Standards that have sold with EMG's in them for good prices. The LTD 1000 Series are a solid instrument and built very well, I've owned 3 of them so far. I'm not sure on the pricing for the Prestige Ibanezes, I've never owned one of those before.

Wow I didn't realize how great of deals there are on ebay. I'm not too thrilled with buying something i haven't played, but those are some great deals.
#13
Yeah if you're not only wanting to find something local on craigslist, the internet will have tons of more options. Only thing is you can't try them out before you buy if there are none around your area. For metal I'd go with the higher line of BC Rich, Jackson, LTD myself. If there's a Guitar Center nearby try a bunch of guitars you're interested in. Then look up on the internet which ones you liked for a deal. Just a suggestion.

^It's sad really too, being such a well-built instrument. I sold my first EC-1000 (sunburst model with the JB/59 set) for $450 in excellent mint condition. The 2nd EC sold for $550 and the MH-1000 was traded even for a Highway One Stratocaster. I've still got the body of the Hwy.

EDIT: I wish they made a H-1000 with a 24.75" scale.

The 1000 series in comparison between 400 or 401, the 400 was best, they are like a 1000 without the bling. All were EC's.

For what it's worth i would take a 1550/1570 ibanez prestige over any of the ltd's. I have a 3550mz,2570evsl and a 1570. I paid under $700 NEW from gc, and around $400-$500.

The only 400 series I've played was a Viper and I didn't care for it at all. I do wish they didn't dip the 1000's in a vat of abalone though . Yeah, I'm sure there are better guitars out there for the money.. I wouldn't know much about Ibanez though, practically everyone I've picked up made my hand hurt from the neck being so thin. So I don't pay much attention to them.

The ibanez's i have are probably cheaper then most. Other that the 1550 which are dirt cheap all the time.

You get used to the neck, i also play 50's profile Gibsons. To each their own.

I played a bunch of SG's at guitar center and I'm gonna have to say I want a guitar with a strat type body and not a really thick neck, but not too thin. I've always liked my epiphone fat strats neck thickness. I liked the EMG 81 85's I played but I think I want some hi gain passives.
#24
BTW I do not want a guitar with locking nuts at the head of the neck. I hate those kinds of tremolo systems
#25
Floyd Rose trems? I'm not too big on them either.

Try playing a Gibson Flying V, their stock bridge pickup (Gibson 500T) is a rock machine. I'm a big fan of the one in my V, probably my favorite OEM pickup for high gain applications.

Any good strat type models with some heavier high gain pickups i could search for on ebay? I'm trying to spend 6 to 800 dollars here...so i'm trying to get a really good deal on something. I would certainly settle for a V or explorer if it was a good enough deal. I just don't know what passive pickups to be looking for for the kind of high gain music I'm going to be playing, even though some emg's wouldn't be the worst thing. I really do like how they capture a lot of the melodies even with high gain.

500t's seriously kick ass. I was cheap on my main Gibson les Paul and threw a 500T in the bridge and it was pretty solid. Buy them used. $40ish.

Have you seen my V, Trashed? I've been looking for a used zebra coil 500T to stick in the bridge. Such an underrated pickup in my opinion, the V in general is underrated too. Their necks are similar to most "metal" necks but not super thin. Mine has the thinnest neck in my collection , which isn't saying much with my ".80 preference .

^that's the land I'll be going to if I end up getting this stoner guitar

Definitely looking for a Gibson, fender, Jackson, or Ibanez at this point. I always liked how my RG5EX1 played, but I hated that shitty ass edge III tremelo. Obviously im looking for a much superior guitar, but I liked the feel of my RG but preferred the lightness off my epiphone fat strat
