How good are these guys? The ones that tour with pop stars and play the guitar for them?? And how competitive are these gigs?
Guitar.

They're good.

And it's not just how good. It's also your personality, looks, etc.

...modes and scales are still useless.

I feel like they need to be theoretically trained and good-looking

Although I've watched many of them, and I've never been impressed. Ok, I've sometimes been impressed, but there's no need for them to do awesome things because pop songs are too boring and simple.

Now, I'm not saying simple is a bad thing, I'm all for simple, but it's like....shitty simple. I don't know how to explain it, but the same like 6 chords over and over and over and then OH SHIT key change! ==>4 different chords
For the most part, strumming styles aren't novel and there's no fun-they're just strumming away with no soul.

There's a difference between good and flashy. They're good. They have perfect timing and a keen sense of ensemble. You and thousands of other bedroom shredders couldn't keep up with a simple pop song at that standard if your life depended on it.

Aye. Tours and records. Nuno's making big dough, but what I wouldn't give for something in the vein of Pornograffiti from him.

^I was in a couple of classes with Ben. He's an awesome guitarist and a very nice guy. Look up his "improv journals" on YouTube. Super great.

He's going good with his own band anyway.

I've always thought it'd be pretty cool to be a bassist for a rapper. Even though I don't like the genre, there's so much room to groove and it's fun making people dance. This is sort of related.

dawg I ain't no shredder
I have played along with pop songs before, and they really aren't hard to pick up on. They're very predictable. I could definitely be on those pop stages if I had just heard their songs a few times.
However, the reason why these guys get their jobs is because they can learn this songs quick by just reading which chords they have to play, and what notes to hit. I don't do well with those sorts of things, which is why I ain't playin with no pop stars

It's not just playing ability either. You've got to show up on time, make people want to keep you around, not piss anyone off, and look like you want to be there when you're on stage.

Im pretty sure you can take as long as you want to learn them, as long as you get all of them down. I'm sure they can learn them quick, but that's not a very tough skill. I bet most people on here can learn a chordy pop song in one go or less.

You actually have to be a very skilled musician and guitarist. Not only that, but you are a performer when you're with any type of pop act. You need to look and act the part just as much as any actor would.

I'm sure it's extremely competitive. It would be fun as hell, though. I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Would never want to consider it as a career because loleveryoneisbetter

I know a guy who got down to the last two guitarists to go with the big Lion King musical band but lost out. Dude knows Tesseract and jams with them like it's nothing, can't get in to play Lion King...gotta be mad to get in that business

I think being one of those guys who plays with solo artists and such would be a great job.

Getting jobs like that is just crazy luck.

One of the users on here, colin617 (used to mod GG&A, might still, but he hasn't been on in ages) kinda just stumbled into playing guitar for Taylor Swift

I'm sure the ability to sight read is also a requirement. That alone would keep most guitarists orut.
