what do you mean by alternative rock? just in case our idea of alternative rock is different from yours.

Playability is more important than tone.

I think it depends on how big your hands are.

If you have small hands, get a 24-inch Mustang or a used Jaguar. If you have oven mitts for hands, get a 25.5-inch Strat. If you're somewhere in the middle, then a 24.75-inch scale used Gibson might do the trick.
