The psychopath thread got me thinking; how can you know whether you are or are not crazy? In the end you only have your own way world view and way of thinking. So I assume it's pretty difficult to realize that you are doing something that is completely out of the norm. How do you know what empathy is, when you don't have it? How do you know you lack it etc.

Discuss, or don't.

Ps. I am not talking about the hypochondriacs/e-chondriacs, but the people that are really crazy.

I often wonder this. Like, what if I have some ridiculous form of ongoing world delusion, where I imagine this whole world which is nothing like the one I actually live in.

Like, when I take a shit, what if I'm actually sitting on a crowded bus but I just believe I'm on the toilet, on my own? When I go to work, am I actually just walking around an abandoned warehouse talking to myself? Are humans even human or just a product of my delusional imagination?

If by crazy, you're simply referring to "psycopathy," it can be quite obvious upon observation that a psychopath doesn't work in the same way as other people do. If you're a psychopath, upon watching movies or reading books, you'll be confronted with emotions you don't experience, and people will discuss them as if they're real. You'll realize that they either experience something you don't, or they're all pretending to and your world is a lie.

You won't understand empathy or love or happiness. You'll understand pride, fear, pleasure, sadness, and bitterness.

If by crazy, you mean out of touch with reality, then yeah, that's difficult to figure out. But it's easier to realize you're going insane when you've done psychedelic drugs and know what insanity feels like.

Recently i've been having crazy thoughts about killing my brother.

Ever since he got his pet bird he wont shut the **** UP. He's more annoying than the bird itself. Whats more annoying is that he insists that he keeps it in the room where I have my PC so every waking hour of his all he does is **** about in the room tweeting at his ****ing annoying bird.

I've snapped at him about 7 or 8 times about it already since he won't stop. For those who don't know he suffers from extreme OCD and he has patterns he must do and I believe that now tweeting to the bird non-stop has become one of his ****ing rituals he must do. I'm reaching boiling point at times and I don't actually know what i'm capable of one day if he doesn't stop.

It's like waterboarding but instead of a drop of water constantly dropping on my head its him repeating the same noises over and over. THERE IS NEVER SILENCE! I'm gonna end up going totally insane Jack Torrence style!!

Well, now thats out of my system...

There's no way of knowing if you are crazy or not really.
I'm probably crazy but since there is no proper test to determine levels of craziness, I can keep pretending I am just a normal guy.

FYI, there's no medical designation of sanity of insanity, there is the legal take on insanity which essentially equates to an incapacity to be responsible for one's actions.

Psychopaths are an interesting case. They are conventionally rational- they suffer from no delusions, hallucinations, no neurotocisms. However, they act in such a way that betrays a deep sort of ignorance of others and also causal relationships between their behaviour and consequences of those behaviours.

Robert Hare conducted a study in which participants were given a thirty second countdown, and upon reaching zero they received a painful electric shock. The controls, prior to being shocked, registered psychophysiological markers of anticipatory anxiety in the form of increased skin conductivity (through sweating), whereas psychopaths demonstrated no such difference. They could not simulate the pain they were about to receive, even after being repeatedly shocked. Obviously, they registered distress when actually receiving the shock.

This study might illuminate why psychopaths are repeatedly observed comitting the same crime or family of crimes. Unable to profit from experience, usually punishment in this case, they are doomed to acting out their considerably strong impulses.

I would suggest that the psychopath is cursed by a sort of ignorance- he is not equipped with the necessary faculties for compassion, and therefore is acting without knowledge.

Bounded rationality asserts that we are rational only to the extent that our cognitive ability, time constraints and acquired knowledge allow.

My argument is that bounded morality similarly exists. Psychopaths are in woeful ignorance about the inner states of others, having no experiential means to empathise with them. It is then questionable whether they qualify as "rational" actors, given their deficits in affect and anticipatory simulation.

They can't be considered moral agents, but they are rational agents.

Why is a distinction between morality and rationality necessary? It seems a false dichotomy.

I am counting emotional responses to stimuli as a form of information. If I present you with the problem of 2+2, you nonvolitionally answer "4", even if you don't express this fact. To be rational is to involuntarily accept evident truths. If you were not familiar with what the symbols "2" and "4" represented, you wouldn't be able to come to that conclusion. If you were severely impaired, your inability to hold abstractions like numbers would make such an operation impossible.

Similarly, psychopaths lack the faculties to simulate the emotional experience of others. Therefore they may not act rationally or morally, being deprived of information that would compel them to act otherwise. Not information in a dry sense, but in the sense of emotional experience that correlates to other people's emotional experience. Knowing that you have emotions in principle, and really feeling a close approximation of those emotions are different grades of knowledge with different behavioural outcomes.

If psychopaths had this knowledge, they would not be psychopaths, because they would be compelled by nature of this knowledge to act contrary to their usual patterns of behaviour.

The trick is to ask your self if your crazy, if this conversation is longer than yes or no, your crazy.

I think the saying "the difference between a sane person and a crazy person is the sane person knows when to stop acting crazy" kind of applies. I think it takes a sane person to realize that they are capable of being a little bit crazy but a crazy person might think they are perfectly sane.

But really, you have to clearly define "sane" and "insane" before making these kind of judgements and i think those definitions are going to be subjective, depending on personal views, and cultural and societal values.

I hope that doesn't seem completely ridiculous and nonsensical, it's 1am and i think i've already used my daily quota of IQs.
I like analogue Solid State amps that make no effort to be "tube-like", and I'm proud of it...

So many people say that if you think you are crazy then you aren't actually insane. I disagree with that so much. It's very easy to tell when people criticize you for lack of empathy/abnormal thoughts/abnormal actions 'n stuff that you don't think are wrong.
