Hey everyone.

Every now and then, the local club runs a 70s/80s night, and a load of local bands turn up to play one-hour sets of cover songs. I wanted to set our setlist apart from the others, yet still keep some memorable tracks in there. The whole point is to play songs that people would be able to sing along with, songs that are instantly recognisable. Some of these don't fit that, so they will likely be replaced during one of the many revisions. As it stands, the setlist is:

Original

Days Like These - Asia
Hit Me With Your Best Shot - Pat Benatar
One Way Or Another - Blondie
Rock & Roll Band - Boston
I Want You To Want Me - Cheap Trick
Hotel California - The Eagles
Cherokee - Europe
Barracuda - Heart
Runnin' Down A Dream - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Every Breath You Take - The Police
Keep On Loving You - REO Speedwagon
Jessie's Girl - Rick Springfield
Lonely Is The Night - Billy Squier
Rockmaker - Toto
I Wanna Rock - Twisted Sister
Tush - ZZ Top

Revision #1

Hit Me With Your Best Shot - Pat Benatar
One Way Or Another - Blondie
More Than A Feeling - Boston
I Want You To Want Me - Cheap Trick
Hotel California - The Eagles
Beat It/Billie Jean - Michael Jackson
Separate Ways - Journey
Runnin' Down A Dream - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Every Breath You Take - The Police
Keep On Loving You - REO Speedwagon
Hello - Lionel Richie
Jessie's Girl - Rick Springfield
We're Not Gonna Take It - Twisted Sister
Here I Go Again - Whitesnake
Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who
Tush - ZZ Top

How would you alter this setlist to make it fit the theme of the night better, without pushing it over about an hour in length (give or take a few minutes)?

Thanks in advance

Get some ****ing Michael Jackson in there, man.

This, Billie Jean or bust.

And Born To Be Wild is a 60's song.

And I imagine Barracuda is ******edly difficult to pull of live.

Same for Lonely is the Night, moreso stylistically though.

Days Like These/Rockmaker/Cherokee, what is this? I don't even.

Seriously, TS, who is your singer if you think you can pull of all this.

And you can NEVER go wrong with Cheap Trick.

You need:

Head Over Heels - Tears for Fears
Welcome to the Machine - Pink Floyd

Also, your songs that didn't make it are all better than the ones that did.

There are two (four, at a push) singers we could use. Admittedly we wouldn't be able to pull it all off, but we'd get close enough for the night, I guess.

Let's add Billie Jean and I Want You To Want Me, and take off the six you specified. What would you replace the other four with?

So let's say we add these two and all of the songs that didn't make it. Which would you take out?

You list needs this:

Journey
ZZ Top
White Snake

I imagine some Guns would go over quite well. I'm less sure about Mötley Crue, and I think Ace Of Spades would be a little heavy. It's also not the easiest thing to sing, which would be the whole point of the night.

Any Journey you'd recommend, excluding Don't Stop Believing? I imagine by the time we're up, everyone would have heard it three or four times. Perhaps Any Way You Want It, or Lights? What do you think?

Just stuck it in there to replace Steppenwolf. Should have done it sooner, really.

I Wanna Rock - Twisted Sister
Tush - ZZ Top

I feel like We're Not Gonna Take It's lyrics are more well known than I Wanna Rock

More Than a Feeling is Boston's most well known song

Toto, Asia, and Europe? idk where you're from, but in America, Europe's only enduring song is The Final Countdown, which is a terrible song I don't recommend anyone play Toto and Asia's popularity haven't endured over here either.

You could use Michael Jackson, either Billie Jean or Beat It would work.

Some other suggestions:
AC/DC- You Shook Me All Night Long
Aerosmith- Sweet Emotion
KISS- Rock and Roll All Night
Van Halen- Running With the Devil

And I second Hello by Lionel

Who are you playing for? If you got a bunch of old dudes who wants to hear the music they like way back, then you should at least get one song by Oingo Boingo in there.

Hell, play some Oingo Boingo even if you're playing for kids.

We're playing for whoever turns up. In the past, it has been guys in their 50s and their kids.

What song would you recommend?

Surrender is like the best song to cover ever, but I wasn't sure if more people would know the melodies to Want You. I love Dream Police, but I don't think I could recall the verse melody right away. So I would keep it to Surrender or Want You.

Here are some random, off the cuff suggestions:

Should I Stay or Should I Go - The Clash
Fat Bottomed Girls - Queen
Rebel Rebel (if you have less instrumentation)/Young Americans (if you can pull off a full enough sound) - David Bowie
When Doves Cry - Prince
Burnin' For You - Blue Oyster Cult
Psycho Killer/And She Was - Talking Heads

If we replace Want You with Surrender, what would you take out for Fat Bottomed Girls and Burnin' For You?
