On the song From Finner by Of Monsters And Men, listen to the guitar in the background from 0:45-1:00: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZTsxAQXWys

It sounds like an acoustic guitar being suppressed or something. What is that exactly? All I can think of is its the chords being palm muted if it's possible to do that with chords. If someone could tell me how to get that sound I would very much appreciate it

Studio trick, they've put in two tracks of guitar, one plays chords, another is fret muted.

IMO that's just basic acoustic guitar. It's just pretty quiet and that's why you can't really hear what it plays. You can only hear the strumming noise. And it is possible to palm mute chords. But I don't think you need to palm mute to achieve that sound. I think it sounds like that because the acoustic guitar is so quiet. It could also be just strumming muted strings. So mute the strings with your fretting hand and strum.

Just remember that there are no boring scales, just boring players.
