I need some sort of PA setup to bring vocals up to be heard with the rest of the band (2 guitars, 1 bass, drums; modern (death,prog,core) metal).

It has a 1000W claass D poweramp in it, and it was recommended to me by a GC employee, but obviously I want to get other opinions before jumping on it.

I'm concerned about any single powered monitor being able to actually cut through a full band mix, regardless of wattage rating.

Depending on how loud you are I say at least two 1x15 cabs would be the minimum I'd go with.
MusiciansFriend had some powered 1x15 cabs on sale right now, might be worth looking into

If it is only for practice two 1x12's would work for vocals only.
All I use is JBL and EV for my PA

Is the number of cabs more important than the wattage of the cab(s)? Is the issue sound dispersion?

It works just like guitar speakers. More sounds bigger and fuller and fills out the hall better. Hard to go wrong with either EV or JBL PA bins. I like to run a combination of 15's and 12's (with horns) but more often than not I just run 4x15. 4x15 and 2x12 together is the shiz though.

Yeah

I would say 2 decent 350+ (RMS) powered speakers should be fine. This will (like you asked) help the sound dispersion . And like a 1x12 combo, get those cabs off the ground and as close to ear level as you can (get some stands if you can afford them)

Yeah, my live set-up is two JBL JRX-125's, two JBL SR-4722A's and two EV 1x18 subs for the front of house and four 1x12 EV wedge's for the monitors.

It is F-n loud and it sounds awesome, but it is a lot of gear to haul around when you add the racks of amps, Eq's, BBE, Crossovers and cable boxes.

The wattage concerns me because I have tried to use my 600W 115 bass combo as a PA, and completely maxed out the vocals did not come close to cutting through the mix. My bass sits perfectly fine in the mix with it though.

I have read that bass amps are somewhat similar to PA amps, hence my concern. Will a less wattage actual PA (not bass amp) do the job with a mic a lot better?

Bass amps do not make good PA's. I don't care what anybody says, they don't. I've filled some pretty big halls with a 200+200W PA. With good bins you can get away with a surprisingly small amp. I also have a 2000W PA amp but I hardly ever need it (which is good because it weighs a ****ing shitload.)

I'm not trying to mic the band. I just want vocals to be heard in a garage practice space. Surely I can get away with a single powered monitor for that purpose?

Those should be fine. (this is for practice right?)

You also have to account the Bass amp does not have a preamp designed to take a mic signal properly. An acoustic amp can sometimes have a mic input that works decent only if your playing an acoustic and need a little vocal reinforcement

We were using the 2x15 passive versions of that for a while and I have to say that I was less than impressed. My JBL bins shit all over 'em.

Go with the 12's, Vocals will be heard a bit better with those, and it's a bit cheaper and more compact. Not to say 15's won't work, but I like 12's better for reproducing everything but bass.

As per your volume concerns, they will cut through just fine because you have to put them on stands.
