You need some sort of interface of course. Guitar Rig makes its own dedicated interface, but you can use any USB guitar interface.

When I'n recording, I am using Guitar Rig as a plug in into Cubase, using only my old Line 6 UX2 as an interface. Works perfectly.

Do you have a usb-interface?

No. You need an interface to convert your analog guitar signal into a signal that can be produced digitally. Several guitar interfaces with onboard soundcards are capable of doing this. An example would be something like this: http://www.thomann.de/gb/line6_pod_studio_ux1.htm

You can't just plug in your guitar into the microphone-port of your PC, if that is what you are implying.
