Hey guys, looking at buying a amp as i'm currently borrowing my brothers line 6 (which i don't like very much tbh)
i've seen two second hand marshalls advertised and was wondering if anyone has had any experience of the two models and/or which they believe is better?
the two models are the marshall 8080 valvestate and the Marshall VS230 (valvestate)
Cheers!

Not sure if you will like the Valvestate line. They really are love 'em or hat 'em amps. Try them both and see which you like better.

Why are these the only 2 amps you are choosing from?

saw these two on a website second hand, not keen on soending huge dollars on an amo atm as i'm looking at getting a guitar soon

i'm guessing being a marshall they'll get a decent rock/hard rock tone, will they be any good for guns n roses/Slash stuff?

Best answer is go try them, I personally don't care for them, but they are not completely horrible amps either.

The Marshall Lead 100 MOSFET (made in the mid 1980's)might be worth a look. These were soposedly SS versions of the JCM800. They sound pretty good and can be found cheap used in certain markets. This is not a Metal amp, but a Rock amp with what I'd call medium gain on tap

i live in western australia, not really sure about my budget, i'm thinking about buying a nice les paul in a few months time
and if i see anything that's of good quality for a somewhat affordable price i'll think about getting it.
i'm looking at possibly jamming with a few mates soon but no gigging as yet, i'll wait till i get alittle better before that

Buying a 'nice Les Paul' only to run it through a Spider doesn't make sense - assuming it is a Spider.

There are lots of 'value' Les Paul styled guitars if you care.

There are lots of amps out there that have a 'Marshall' type tone.

You've already answered most of the questions we ask but here is how we role around here:

when it comes to amps i'm probably looking for used, because if i do buy the les paul i won't have lots of money left to spend so only $300-400 max at the moment for an amp

i don't always practice with an amp (one of the reasons being that i don't like the amp i'm using!) but when i go to my mates house he has a few decent amps i can use

i listen to powderfinger mainly (if you're not from australia you probably haven't heard of them) they're more Alternative rock, not heaps of distortion alot of the time; however i play alot of guns n roses stuff aswell
i love the extra power of some of the harder stuff and who doesn't love slash's tone!

Laney Cub12
Laney VC50/100
Marshall JCM2000 DSL401/201
Peavey VTM 60
Marshall DSL15c

Most of these you will have to find used, but they all can cop that 80's marshall hard-rock tone

Well you would have to decide that.

I would prefer one of these if I wanted the 80's GnR type tone on a budget

Get a nice amp. Gibsons are nice, but overpriced in comparison to many other very good LP copies.

Hey mate I'm from WA too, I can relate to having trouble finding a decently priced amp in the area! It says on your profile you started playing this year, so you may or may not be keen to spend big bucks on an amp and guitar at this stage but IMO, you are likely to get a lot more enjoyment out of your playing if you buy a decent amp and guitar. If you can, hold out until you find a good deal on gumtree for a used amp (ideally not SS). For guitars, ebay would have to be your best bet, and you will save hundreds buying from US despite the mediocre exchange rate at the moment. Amps usually cost too much to post though. Other than that, if you live in Perth, the rock inn (http://www.therockinn.com/) is a pretty good store for browsing / testing quality gear with friendly, non-judgmental staff! Happy jamming

good to see another perth boy on here! yeah i'm alittle scared about buying an expensive guitar off ebay, and i'm not a huge fan of buying guitars second hand unless i know the person i'm buying off, or if it's just a great deal
just need that special feeling of it being mine

amps on the other hand i'm not fussed with being second hand, been looking on gumtree but there isn't much worth looking at on there

i've heard great stuff about the rock inn so i'll deffinetly check them out, Kosmic is good for the range they have, i just struggle to have time to get down to those shops...
thanks for the advice!

Your best bet is probably to try and find a used Laney Cub on ebay. Basically, the biggest one you can afford. The bigger ones have bigger better speakers. They do come in a head too which is a better thing because you can change speaker cabs.
A 15W tube amp through decent speakers is good enough to jam with.

There's a few kicking around.

i'm thinking about putting off the thought of buying the expensive les paul for later

looking at the marshall dsl15&40c amps, from videos i've seen they sound great, probably as close to a rock/slash sound with a marshall for the money.
thinking about going to my music shop sometime soon to check some amps out (be looking for these two) to see how i like them, hopefully i can find a nice second hand one somewhere if i do

once again i ask if anyone has any experiences/knowledge about these amps?
thanks for any help guys!
