EDIT: to format correctly

Looking to upgrade from my terrible 10watt kustom. I was considering either a combo orange or marshall amp but am open to suggestions.

Budget: Most I can pay is $300, anywhere at under that is perfect.

Genres: I'm used to punk type music (old AFI, Misfits, Descendents, Offspring, etc) but I want to play more complex type stuff (Avenged Sevenfold, SOAD, etc). So I want good distortions that don't sound like fuzz during soloing while also having the punky tones I love accessible. Cleans aren't super important.

New/Used: Preferably new because I want quality assurance, but if anyone knows a reliable used source please let me know :]

Home or gig: Home

Closest City: Allentown, PA (a city 2 hours or so north of Philadelphia)

Current Gear: amp is a 10 watt kustom amp (box of fuzz) and I have a fender squier stagemaster with a blocked tremolo bridge.

All help is appreciated!

0.k., first off, don't get the Marshall.
Marshall is a nice brand when you look at the logo, but half of the money you give 'em for their amps go to the logo's designers.
Not all Marshalls are bad don't get me wrong, but MGs are.

Second off, don't buy a DS-1.
They can sound good, but they're hard to be worked in a way in which they actually do sound good.
Also you can indeed find a better bang for the buck.

Have a look at the whole transistor vs. tubes debate and see if you like the tubes idea.
Done that, go into the sticky posts and find the one in which is explained the way to ask for advice here if you want a really solid answer.

Clue: amplifiers amplify so don't turn it on if you need quiet.

After looking into it, I found that tube amps are wayyy above my price range. I probably should have mentioned my price range, it is no more than $250, as I'm only 16 and have no income to speak of Thanks for the suggestions though, I wasn't looking to spend $50 on a pedal I might not need. Also, I cannot find the thread you speak of.

If your in the USA, you can get some very nice (older) tube amps for <$250 if you know where to look.

Well what kind of music do you play, and are you planning to gig?

With that money you could still get a small tube amp but it'd depend on your circumstances.

At the moment with the information we have I'd have to just suggest a Vypyr. But answer those questions and we can help you further. It's just that my definition of a "nice gain" is the classic overdrive in AC30's.

hey, be nice to the hipster.
I hear they use false bypass switches.

It's, like, so ironic.

Up until now I haven't been into a whole lot of variety, mostly punk type stuff; older AFI, Misfits, Descendents, Offspring, etc. Although I will still love and play music like this I'm want to branch out and learn more complex stuff; Avenged Sevenfold, SOAD, generally a bit more metal. I want good solo distortion tones that don't just sound like fuzz when I play complex stuff, but maybe also with the punkier type tone I've come to love. Is that better? and as of now I don't plan on gigging, so that isn't an important factor.

EDIT: btw, do either of you that mentioned the <$250 tube happen to know of a site or source? i can always check out ebay/craigslist but I'd prefer a guarantee quality/warranty type thing

EDIT #2: For some reason this escaped me, mentioning my guitar is probably important haha. I have a Fender Squier Stagemaster (with a blocked tremolo bridge).

New? I think I would struggle a bit. Let me think about it.

Just to give you an idea, you might get more bang for your buck buying used but that can have its disadvantages too. Some of these may not be perfect for Ax7 and such but workable - especially with a boost. Barring that, look for a Peavey Vypyr Tube 60. You can find them below $300 and they are ballin'

^ I'd get the B52 AT100 212.

Too big for me actually. I live in an apartment and this thing looks huge, I've already gotten noise complaints playing a 15 watt lol.

All of those amps will be loud bro. Tube amps are loud. Go try some Vypyrs and if you can find a Vypyr 60 - that is what I recommend. It sounds good at lower'ish volumes too. Otherwise, the Jet City JCA22 is good to prolly.

This is a good point. I typically push the volume as loud as I can get away with, so it isn't a dealbreaker. Question; do most of these amps sound worse at lower volumes? If the difference is small then I don't really care, but I know I read somewhere about tube amps and 'saturation' This is why I feel a solid state might be a better option
Also, is this what you're talking about
http://m.guitarcenter.com/In-Store-Used-USED-PEAVEY-VYPYR-60-COMBO-109668624-i3485421.gc
Is this tube or solid state, I don't see it indicated anywhere

most amps sound better cranked up a bit including the Vypyr 60

I've been down the ss route before (Gdec, frontman, sears amp, etc) and my splawn, vypyr tube and 1 watt Blackheart sound miles better imo.

The Vypyr 60 has a tube power section and an analog front end, like the rest of the Vypyrs. The power section has 2 - 6L6 power tubes and a 12X7 phase inverter tube. The power section is lifted right off the Peavey 6505+. It is not perfect for your mid gain stuff but above average in this price range.

I'm loving mine (got it for $300 new) great heavy tone on the distortion and decent but dry cleans (no reverb) and nice bluesy classic rock crunch with the gain up on the clean/crunch channel. And it can get pretty damn loud

thanks for the suggestions everyone. I think I'm gonna go with the vypyr 60. Looks like a good match plus I found a good used deal.

That's a good choice, I wish they would have had amps like that when I was a kid.

I had a 25 watt Dean (I thought was great) From 1994 untill 2001. The Valve state was about the best practice amp you could get.

Good luck
