Hey guys. I use Reaper as my DAW. When I'm recording using a mic into the interface, everything is fine. However, if I'm recording bass or guitar directly into the interface while using a couple of plug-ins, I get some unusual slowdown and crackling on playback.

System Specs:
Intel i5 3570k (3.4ghz)
8gb DDR3 RAM (1600mhz)
120gb SSD (for windows) and 500gb HDD (with reaper installed on)

AFAIK, my computer is more than adequate for recording on a few tracks with plug-ins on, am I right?

So the differences between using a mic and guitar are:
1. the mic/guitar
2. the plugins

?

If so, it's probably the plugins. Although it's odd because your computer does look well spec'd. Are you running other programs at the same time?

When I use a bass preamp VST it causes that slowdown and crackling. I bypassed that plugin and just kept the compressor plugin on and it worked fine. Also, when I have guitar two tracks with the exact same plug-ins engaged, I get that slowdown also. My CPU and RAM do not peak at all AFAIK.

It sounds like a buffering problem. What's the input buffer set to on your ASIO driver?

The only buffer setting I can find is the Media Buffer Size and that's set at '250ms' with 'Highest' thread priority
