Are there any songs that you found because they were sampled in other songs? List or link

When I was a kid, I really liked the song Fantasy by Mariah Carey...

... which, as a teenager, led me to one of my favorite songs of all time, Genius of Love by Tom Tom Club

As a kid I also loved the song California Love by Tupac
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDZ961xhNEo

which eventually led to Joe Cocker's Woman to Woman

I used to hear the song Feel So Good by Mase on the radio and really liked the beat sample, which comes from the funk song Hollywood Swinging by Kool & the Gang

After hearing "Ice Ice Baby" back in like '91, I was led to the song by Queen and David Bowie, "Under Pressure."

I think Vanilla ruined it for me.

I hate both of those songs.

Herbie Hancock is responsible for some very sampleable tunes;

original

sampled

he even did some interesting re-imaginings of his own tunes;

On the come up we were listening to Grateful Dead and the music started passing through my bowel and out my arsehole as this violet stream of light. I shat music. It was beautiful.

2Pac - Ghetto Gospel

Elton John - Indian Sunset
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qd08FyXY3E

the way Eminem chopped it and pieced it back together to form the chorus is genius.
Someone is wrong on the internet. Only you can help.

Yeah it's a great track, original as well.

I always loved how Elton's version ended with "And peace to this young warrior comes with a bullet hole" with the high note at the end, but I can see how the lyric wasn't appropriate... or too appropriate rather.

I've found that Herbie Hancock seems to be a goldmine for Hip-Hop/Jazz-Hop artists to sample, and understandably so.

And another one I love from Digable Planets:

Well I just posted the full album for that in the Full Album thread if you wanna go listen. And yeah, he certainly seems to be. Both those Digable Planets songs sampled several other songs in there, but those are the ones I chose at least.

I have it already But thank you! A prof of mine used to rap in the 90's and it fun because his style is very similar (mix of fun rhythms and intellectual lyrics over classic NYC street samples along with old school funk/r&b samples) plus I get to make fun of his lisp. Also I like this album a lot for my radio shows because I can't have any cursing since it's before 9pm and most of the album is FCC friendly

edit: P.S. d'you have a facebook?

That's awesome. I love that style. And yeah, there aren't a lot of good hip-hop groups that manage to keep their lyrics tame like them.

As for the P.S. I most definitely do have facebook. Why? You wanna add me?

I don't listen to music that samples other music, I have discovered classical pieces I like where a melody was quoted in a contemporary song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vn91tBlnNic

For example, this song quotes part of a melody from Solveig's Song from Grieg's Peer Gynt.
