Hey all, I'm an aspiring luthier, and have had an ad up on Clist for a while now looking for old or broken guitars that I could buy. Well I finally had a bite and it's a 2010 SG standard with crack headstock. The headstock is still Attached and the break looks pretty clean. Now I know the price point for fixed guitars that's easy enough to find. But how much would you pay for one that's broken?

I asked the guy for his price and he said, $5-600. Now this would be my first headstock repair, and though I've read up plenty about it and watched plenty of videos. It'll still be my first and I don't want to have a ton invested in case I butcher it or can't fix it.

Any help on a price point? I obviously want to get it for as cheap as possible. And in my mind, it's a broken guitar. I was thinking like $200-300, basically a little more than the price of the hardware and electronics.

Yeah he wants way to much, $200-$300 would be what I would pay, it will only be worth $400ish fixed properly

$400 would be my absolute top dollar on it, assuming everything else checks out fine and I wanted it bad enough. With a cleanly fixed headstock it might bring $600-650 to the right person.

Get some good glue (I use Tite-bond and have no problems) and a few good clamps like the Irwin 100lbs or better quick clamps

I've got some titebond ready to go. And some clamps as well. From what I've seen and read up on getting top and bottom and side pressure is key to make sure it lines up and mends properly. Like I said, it's a clean break with a lot of surface area for the glue so hopefully it'll go well. I'm still on edge about attempting to repair the finish or not. But first things first haha. I'll post pics in the gearbuilding forums tomorrow when I get it.

Use a syringe to get the glue up in the crack if you can not get it otherwise and be careful of the truss rod if the crack is next to it

Will do man, it'll be over in the gearbuilding and customizing forums tomorrow. Thought, I'd get to work on it tonight, but its been a long day. So tomorrow it will begin. After taking a look at it this evening though, it's a lot better than the pictures had shown. Should be an easy fix for my first attempt (knock on wood). I'm pretty committed to doing an actual refinish/touch up now as well. There's a few other spots other than the neck that could use some work. All cosmetic, but I want it to look at good as possible if I try to sell it.
