Budget? - $500usd, $700usd tops.

Genres? - Metal, neoclassical; Basically looking for a very warm, very saturated distortion that allows for chord work; artists like Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, etc.

New or Used? - Prefer used

Home or Gig? - Home use right now, but hopefully gigging again in the future -and I have lenient room mates. 20w-50w, but 100w would be okay as well.

Closest City? - Akron, OH

Current Gear? - Modded VOX AC15CC1, 60s 5w tube head, 2x12 head, TS-9 clone, DS-1 Clone, VOX Saturator, Dean Markley Overlord

I'm basically looking for a head to do high gain sounds with, because I have everything else covered pretty well. I'd also prefer to try it out any amp first before ordering it online. I've considered a Carvin Legacy I, but haven't been able to find one to try. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

In addition to the standard answers I searched CL real quick and came up with this short list. I would personally consider each one of these. Some are a tad over budget but you need to haggle on CL anyway. I know Bugera gets a lot of flack (I slag them all the time ) but that 6260 is cheap and has good tone. You'd take a bit of a risk from a quality perspective. Same with the B52 though. I really like the B52 AT100 and that deal includes a cab. I also really like the 6505+112 and that is a great price. That Vox may do the trick really nicely was well but I have not played the higher gain Night Trains. Can't go wrong with the DSL or the Valveking either.

You won't find too much new that will work well so I'm glad you specified used. The 6505+112, Peavey Vypyr 60, and maybe the new Valveking are the only new amps I can think of within your budget and I think even the VK is higher than that.

Good luck

Edit: Sorry. I just now saw the $700 top end part. That does open things up a bit more. I would NOT settle for an amp that has potential quality issues (which includes older DSLs) with that kind of budget. You are in JSX and Mesa territory.

Ibanez Thermion ~$400 used (solid consturction with great components, awesome dark/warm clean channel, gain somewhere between Marshall and Mesa, takes TS pedals well, the louder you crank the better it sounds)
Mesa Rectoverb/Single Rec ~$700 used (basically super versatile awesome heads)

Try out a Peavey 5150 or 6505 212 Combo if you can find one. I recently picked one up for $400 on CL and it's known for the gain. . . .

So, I hit up a few music stores in the area, and tried what I could. Tried a 6505+ at Guitar center. Liked it, didn't bring it up past 2 though (lot of people in the store, and I didn't want to be that guy). Tried a Valve King. It was okay, but not smooth enough high end. Tried one of the new DSLs. Fizzy, nasty mess. Wouldn't recommend it. I would've tried more, but Guitar Center was still recovering from Black Friday, and the other stores were too small to have more amps. Back to researching.

Oh, and hey 311, how've you been? I think I need to lurk less, post more.

peavey ultra plus, XXX, JSX, all are great and in budget. relativity similar.

if you want a broad range, you do not want a 5150/6505. they are good amps, but not for versatility or cleans.

Hey bud.

As mentioned the JSX, Ultra, Mesa something would work well.

The 6505+, Valveking, and DSL all really benefit from 'tight' OD pedals and EQ pedals in the loop. You can change any one of these amps from a blues amp to a brutal amp with simply an EQ pedal in the FX loop.

I'd give those another change. I think I set the CL search at $600 (as I tend to go over a bit) but I'd be curious to see what you have at $800 for a head. College towns are great for gear hunting.

The JSX is what you want, clear cut IMO. I owned one - while it's very versatile, it was pretty obvious to me that the thing was built to be a shred/neo/virtuoso machine.

Holy crap those amps are way overpriced. $800 for a Single Rec? $725 for a JSX? Yeah, hell no.

I've found most of the time people asking that high over going price usually flat out reject "lowball" offers. Like they're completely disillusioned from actual going prices.

This IS true.

If you use a link to search relative prices, like the one in my sig, or eBay complete listings then as a seller hopefully you will get a clue. The amp market is so upside down right now though. Once they list their amp over and over again every two weeks and drop it by $50 each time - then pounce.

No joke - There's a guy who's been trying to sell an Ibanez RG320 on my CL for $350 (I think it was $450 originally) for months. An old one too with a LoTRSII.
