Well, do you?

I'm watching some dancers right now because the World Cup draw is on and they got some dance group on in the build up and I don't get it at all. Not just in this instance, but dance in general as art, I find it very hard to know what I'm supposed to be feeling.

With music or paintings or poems or whatever else I know what certain things are supposed to make me feel, but with Dance I normally find myself taking my cues from the lighting or the music.

So is this just me or does no-one get it? I think we have a few dancers so hopefully they can shed some light on everything

I don't get most artforms.

Depends on the dancing I guess. Some dancing is pretty cool, especially capoeira, that shit's awesome. But I guess like every medium of expression, one must divide it between art and entertainment. So any dances that involve fighting and fire = art, and dances that involve poles = entertainment.

I've never had a moment where I thought, "the only way I can really truly express myself right now would be with DANCE." Cus, that's ridiculous. Definitely don't get it.

What kind of dance are you watching? Some booty shaking?

Any dance at all. I don't know what a flick of the head or an arm held out to the side is supposed to mean or make me feel

You caught me. Sometimes when I'm overjoyed I stand up and do pirouettes about the room. And then when I'm sad I do pirouettes about the room, but I sort of hang my head at the end.

I once went to a contemporary dance/music show thing at the pompidou centre when I lived in paris, and there was this bit where everyone was just lying on the floor in complete silence for about 10 minutes. I tried so hard not to but I laughed really loud and everyone looked at me like 'who let this fucking pleb in'.

I do kinda get it tho

Not really but I don't wanna make Frances Ha sad. I'm sure it's legit and stuff though I just haven't seriously appreciated it.

Where have I heard this idea, almost entirely word-for-word, before?

Yes, I feel that I do "get" dance as an art-form.

Actually, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that dancing is as much, if not more expressive as an art-form than music.

Yeah, I said it.

Yeah I kind of get it I think.

I mean, a lot of music isn't exactly made with one emotion in mind, and I think it's the same way with dance. Their movements mean whatever you feel.

I don't understand it.
However, I do understand it that other people understand it.
I understand music, paintings, poetry, etc.. others don't.
I don't understand all of them. For instance, a fat neckbeard tapping cool stuff is just sh*t in my opinion, People Grinnin' by Son House on the other hand is something unique.

It's just a mather of perception.
That's just how it is.

Meh, kind of, I guess. It still comes off as very weird to me though and I'm not really one to indulge unless I'm too drunk to care what I'm doing with my body.

I see it like just moving with the music. Like those programs that make colourful swirly thngies from music

I wouldn't mind learning to dance. Not this twerking and rubbing shit, but I mean tango and tsatsatsa and stuff.

i don't get dance as an artform. i find stuff like swing dancing incredibly fun to watch when they're good at it, but it's more of an entertainment thing than an art thing.

The video contains boobies, but I think youtube itself is requiring age verification so I'm pretty much hoping I don't get banned

I'm sad to say I don't. It's not the only artform that doesn't make me feel anything. There's times where I see dance and I see that someone is very talented, but it's just not something that I can comprehend having fun watching for the most part. I can see why the performer might feel something when they do it, but as a viewer, I don't get what it's supposed to do for me unless it's a part of something bigger like a musical performance. I guess I get it when it's used to tell a story.

I lived with a dance student once, and let me tell you, I got it alright.

I mean I kinda deserved it for staring, but I didn't figure she'd take it to court.

That Sigur Ros video is the best thing ever

Totally worth the ban, if it comes to that

Age verification doesn't happen in embedded videos.

Yeah but it's Sigur Ros, just the audio is practically pornography anyway.

Speaking of dance, my high school's dance team did a "performance" at one of our pep rallys while two students were rapping on the auditorium PA. The rappers then proceeded to make it rain fake money on the dancers, which caused dozens of students to rush out of their seats to get some of the money, interrupting and injuring some of the dancers.

Needless to say it was probably the highlight of high school for me.

I've always seen dancing as a sexual thing. I've never seen a ballet, but i imagine it'd have the same effect, sorta
