I've never broken a pickup ring, but I've certainly seen my share. Most of them happen when some goofball doesn't realize that the flat-bottom rings need to be shaped to fit a carve-top. Instead, he'll just torque down on the corner screws, bending the rings in the process. As the plastic ages (sometimes well before), the rings will get brittle and eventually break.
