I don't think this quite falls into the gaming thread and I don't know if there is already a thread on the subject so bare with me but I think this is a serious issue for quite a lot of people.

Essentially Youtube has now come up with a new "copyright content" policy where they can (or a robot) can flag videos of content creators who use clips of videos or songs in their own videos which are deemed to be a "copyright violation". Essentially this means that the videos can still be viewed in some cases, however the revenue earned by the uploader is taken away by youtube so they earn nothing for spending lots of time making a review or video which has a clip of a song or video etc. so people who use youtube as full time employment and spend money to improve their videos can't make money from the content they create.

I am not a youtuber but I think this is ridiculous, and another issue is that it doesn't appear that the actual companies who own the original content ( ie game companies like blizzard, deep silver etc.) are making these claims, it seems youtube is doing this themselves. I personally watch reviews before I buy video games so not being able to do that is quite frustrating for me, but worse for the people who spend time making the reviews.
The AJS is my personal favorite review show as AJ goes very in depth with reviews, E3 interviews, lets play videos and so on... AJ explains this in clearer detail.

It's a bit shit, but I'm hard pushed to get really concerned about it. They've even tried to hit big names in gaming journalism with these copyright notices, which means that to a certain extent this is overzealous third-party claimants trying to make as much comission as possible.

On a side note I'm actually a fan of Angry Joe his reviews are really good, I often find them more insightful than a lot of 'professional' reviews. Not been interested in much of his other stuff though, I get the whole 'character' thing with the rants, but I guess I'm just not that interested in the issues a lot of the time.

The thing is though, review channels like the AJS won't be around if this continues because youtube is their main source of income and if they can't make money making content then they won't keep doing it. At least people like AJ take time and effort to review games whereas IGN and Gamespot just play clips of trailers and small clips for 3 mins while talking about the game in a half arsed way with little to no detail. They always give me the impression they play the game for 2-3 hours then review it.

I have to disagree, the AJ vid is very in your face but it highlights the problems as fact not as parody, it also highlights the fact that a lot of people who use youtube as income will lose out after working very hard and spending lots of money and time on their projects. It's a bit like saying to someone in an office that they can't earn money from their job if they are left handed.

Buy a reviewer license.

But hell one reviewer ripped on a game terribly, I mean the game was bad, but it wasn't a review, and he bought a license, and they claimed copyright on him, and all bad reviews.
Why?
The company was pretty much being a dick. To claim content ID you just have to make a fake email (preferably relating to the content in some way) and just claim it.

Btw games like COD have licenses where if you want to review them badly, you CAN'T until like 3 days after the games release to not hurt initial sales.

I have 1 deleted video on youtube, and 10+ ID matches.

You're right but I'm just not a huge fan of his style.

It is a serious issue for a lot of people though. Hopefully Youtube sorts it out or else I could see a lot of these content creators hosting on alternative sites or looking other sources of income altogether.

I just never liked videos for game reviews. To see how gameplay works and that kind of thing sure, but as far as an actual review, I always feel like it's faster and clearer to read a text review.

Nope, the only chance in hell is if everyone with 2 mil+ subscribers give youtube, and their personal partners, the middle finger all at once, start a corporation, set up a well made video site, hire a staff, and all agree to not use youtube ever again.

Youtube is a monopoly of streaming video, the only other thing I use are for anime specifically, netflix, and porn.

Also ichi posted best video explaining it.

Also I personally with the help of 5 others raised 1800 dollars to help make more public domain content for creative artists. We donated a lot of stuff to public domain to, I personally 2 albums, loops, and 12 midi files.

You'll see my name there, we overall raised whatever that bar says. I fought for copyright freedom I guess.

This.

And I dont pay attention to reviews for a game. I would rather try it out myself. There's lots of games people say are horrible but I like them cause it's my opinion on it.

A very select few, if you count merch especially. But for most really lucky and popular youtube channels/users, it's just a nice supplement on top of their jobs, and/or they get away with part time.
Also lets plays are the most subscribed channels on youtube, it's also very oversaturated. I do lets plays with my friend and he's an amazing editor, and we have premium condenser mics, and we get like 10 views a video. But those people who watch seem to like it a lot.

Yes. I don't see how this is such a revelation for some people. That's like saying "people use TV for full time employment?" In some ways youtubers are more deserving because most come up with their own ideas, do their own camera work, edit the videos, and then upload the videos themselves and let people watch them all for free.

And if you're wondering how they make money, they earn money from ads on youtube and the more views or subscribers they have the more valuable their videos are for ad companies and so youtubers can negotiate ad deals as far as I'm aware.
Most make merch and do get donations to supplement their income but youtube is the main medium for all of it.

Ad block probably 1/4ths their income if not more, some with companies or partnerships with companies have in video ads that are part of the upload. You cannot negotiate with google personally about how valuable you are, you have to get a partnership, with someone other than youtube. Also with 300,000 views I have 10 dollars sitting in my adsense, it's worthless. If you're getting 300,000 views per video though, and have a partnership, you're probably making about 50 per video at the very most. This is why a lot of these people release 3 videos per day every day, and have 3000+ videos.

Why is it stupid? Many of them are entertainers (you know, like musicians, comedians, actors, and so on), and you really have to be good at what you do to actually make decent money of ad revenue.

I suppose that's true in a sense but a lot of people who have successful channels go into other outlets, many get sponsors which do generate quite a bit of income and others get other jobs such as radio presenters or comedians etc. I'm not saying the ads are the main source of their income but it does help and the more views and subscribers you have the more likely other opportunities will become available.
The fact is youtube is the medium which helps people get these chances and the new content id is ruining a lot of youtubers as they can't upload or gain revenue from the content they make even though they should as it is protected by fair use law.

Because all the people that make videos full time are always begging for donations. And basically make a living off of those.

What's the difference between someone who presents a TV show and someone who is a good youtuber other than you get to see the video on youtube for free at any time?
Why should someone who gets all of their camerawork, creative ideas, editing, script etc done for them get paid a lot of money while someone who does all of that for themselves get nothing?

Well, how come I've never noticed that? I've watched a lot of "lets play" videos and I've never heard of that -- some have "begged" for subscribers ("if you like this video, please comment and subscribe..." and so forth) in their earlier videos though, but I've never noticed anyone begging for donations.

So I guess you need to reconsider your statement...

It's much more common with livestreamers. I've ran into the occassional YouTube channel where donations were mentioned once every couple videos, and that there is a link somewhere in the description for people to donate, but the livestreamers on Twitch are all about donations.

I don't think partnering necessarily gives you more money right off the bat. You might get "better" advertisements because your channel is safer through a partner, but I think that is the main reason to get partnered, security.

Also I've heard that upwards of 40% the revenue you make goes right to the partner if you are partnered, so there is that.

No, I look up about five or six text reviews from different sources, read through them, and try to average them out. Mix that with gameplay footage, which I don't consider the same as a review video, and that's usually how I decide. That and asking people I trust the taste of.

I have used something like two metacritic reviews in my life.
