I felt really lazy tonight to ordered an Indian takeaway for dinner. It just arrived and I think the delivery guy was fishing for a tip. I was going to let him keep the change from the order anyway but I had never considered the possibility that it was standard practice to tip the person who delivers.

So do you guys tip delivery drivers?

You do if you don't want a dick-sized hole in your pizza on the next visit.

Nobody in America calls it a "takeaway." He's obviously in the UK.

I have friends that call it "takeaway" and they're American.

No need, your mom and/or wife are giving him plenty.

You normally already pay 2 euros extra for delivery. Why tip?

I usually tip thought as I can't stand to be awful like that.

If there's only gonna be like 50 cent change then I just say keep it because it's awkward waiting for the guy to get the change and stuff.

You'll always be a Walter White, where as a Heisenberg would slam the door without tipping.

And then throw it on the roof.

Because usually that doesn't go to the driver, it goes to the restaurant.

why does culture matter? AFAIK, delivery drivers are ALWAYS paid absolute shit and depend on tips for a livable wage.

Where I live every student dreams of being payed to deliver pizzas. It's easy money for little work.

But the restaurant pays him. Why is his salary my problem? Should be included in the food... it's not America. We pay one price, so even the worst waiters don't suffer under the iron thumb of trying to attain tips.

I rely on tips to keep my car running. My wages are ok (better than what US drivers get anyway) but the money I get towards my car is awful. And when you're averaging 400 miles a week you bet you're gonna need work done on it at some point.

I've never tipped and I've always received good service. Maybe the places around here treat their workers better than they do in other places. Anyway, even if they didn't pay them well enough, I fail to see how it is my responsibility as a consumer to make up the shortfall.

Buuut it's not. I don't get why people talk about "should" like it means a goddamn thing. We should have hoverboards right now, disease should largely be a thing of the past, and world hunger should be eradicated.

Should we give up on achieving any of these things because they SHOULD have happened already? Nope.

yup. especially if you drive in an urban environment as opposed to a suburban one, your car is gonna get a lot of wear and tear.

i've had plenty of friends who were delivery drivers, and a few of them said they just couldn't do it anymore because their cars were just getting so ****ed up that they spent more money on repairs than they made from their job.

I make it simple for you. Does the driver earn a wage? If the answer to that question is:yes. Then the question is: is that wage high enough for him to live on? If the answer is no: he should not get that job. If it is yes: I don't need to tip.

It's that simple...

that's absurd

let's say the answer is no, and he can't live on it. you say he shouldn't get the job, but he already has it and he's obviously not going to quit until he gets a better one because that would be dumber than your opinion. so for now, while he's working that job, what do you do? obviously you wouldn't tip because you're a subpar human being.

No one is forcing you but you're a dick if you don't. Always tip any delivery driver at least $1, otherwise 10%

We have social security here and decent minimum wages, there is no way that the wage would not be enough.

Glad I don't live in a country where shelling out an extra 2 bucks is a big deal.

Do you earn a wage?

yes :
- is it enough for you to live on?
-- yes: then tip
-- no: don't order delivery

no:
- don't order delivery

Speaking from experience as a delivery driver, most places pay the drivers at least $2.00+ less than minimum wage and if the place charges a delivery charge, usually $1.00 or $2.00, it's split 50/50 between the driver and the store.
The drivers have to rely on tips to pay for the gas used to deliver the food to your house.
So while it's not mandatory, it's greatly appreciated and extremely frustrating when someone can't tip you even a dollar or two for bringing you your food

Don't you tip bartenders as well though? That's just weird. So it's like $2 for a bottle of beer and then you pay more for the guy opening it.
