So I downloaded this M4a to MP3 converter from cnet and now I keep getting weird popups on my pc. I later looked at the reviews and they all say it installs malware. I tried to uninstall everything, but a comment says one program is installed under a fake microsoft name. How do i know which one it is?

Well I guess we've learned our little lesson haven't we? Never install stuff without finding about it first.

I wish I could help you though, but I can't. I assume you've already run your virus protection programmes and such.

I'm pretty sure you can get warned/banned for that. Some people are actually dumb enough to do that.

I thought cnet was trustworthy so I never gave it a second thought.

And my crappy netbook wont let me system restore for some reason.

Way to do your homework, TS.

never download anything from the internet unless you really cannot help it. The best way to prevent getting malware is to not download the malware in the first place.

If your antivirus software has failed to remove the malware, back up your valuable files and reinstall your operating system.

Delete every song you downloaded with the downloader, and try to uninstall. I had to do this with kazaa from way back in yesteryear. I'm thinking 04 maybe but anyway use google I'm sute you will find something there. Lastly we have a computer thread

It's only fair if you get one as well.

THey laugh, but you're kinda right. Most firewalls are strong enough these days without any additional antivirus software.

Internet these days...any program that uses the word "converter" in the title is usually malware. Try to find a program that serves more purposes than simply "convert file type x to file type y"

I came here to say exactly that. It always finds random installers my dad downloads when he uses my PC, thank fuck I had the common sense to give him a non-admin account on it.

As a Networking expert I want to bash ur face in for saying that.
Over the course of 5 years, I'll bet Malwarebytes will find more then 100 infected files on that guys computer.

Install a ****ing anti-virus you idiots. it doesn't take a lot of your computers resources, so you wont even know it's there.

Install 1 of these: AVG, Avira, Avast!, Microsoft Security Essentials (all free anti-virus protection programs).

Also install Malwarebytes and Combofix.

What you want to do is update Malwarebytes until he won't update anymore, then initiate a FULL SCAN on your C:/ drive. after you've done this, delete the malware and reboot the computer.
After reboot, Run combofix and reboot again.

Problem solved.

That being said: Cnet is perfectly save, but Cnet also has these ADVERTISMENT download buttons, which DO bring you to these kind of viruswebsites.
Use the right download button.

TBH I tend to use Filehippo way more then Cnet though.

NEVER TELL ANYONE THAT THEY DONT NEED ANTI-VIRUS PROTECTION
