Severed-Metal

House of Ecstacy

Lifelover - Erotik

Dark and provoking, as this album details the addictive features of the urban environment. Self-hatred, dependency, lust and indulgence play an active role in the lives of all. The dimly lit city has its streets and the streets run with the pleasures of man, for the betterment and destruction of.

Pure Filth

Sextrash - Sexual Carnage

SLEAZE. LOOK IT UP AND YOU'LL FIND SEXTRASH. LOOK AT THE ALBUM COVER. PRE-GANGBANG. They're probably going to shove their dirty rotten cocks up that dirty meth addicted stripper's ass/****/mouth at the same time, while they're at it they'll shoot up heroin and drink cheap whiskey that comes in a plastic bottle. That's not all, because this takes place in an alleyway outside of a stripclub called "Anything Goes." This is filth. This. Is. SEXTRASH.

Tooth & Claw

Ulver - Nattens Madrigal - aatte hymne til ulven i manden

Amongst men words went
Of the Full Moone's woe.

When a dirge did rise to Her skylit eye
From the lone winter's colde
They fear'd that the wolf was nigh
Awakened its Majestie of olde

Nights did pass when men claim'd the saw
In Her light that he splits
with the shadow he casts
The shadow of a force unknown
Howling at its God in splendoure infernall

This Devil's Herolde, he hunted the land
And many a man disappear'd
Where She shines, he binds; the Wolf of Hell
He kills o'ver the rumbling Abyss

The Curse is certayne

The Beast below bestowed on him a gift
And by Magick he to wolf was bound
No more was he a slave to God
At midnight treading on hollow grave

Memories from Another World

Unholy - From the Shadows

To transcend human mortality is a gift, but to do so we must become above our own dimension. Fragile and careless we traverse its darkness, seeking its power. My sight not fatigued by my weariness, but what is weariness where there is no concept of time. This is an album to take you away from the universe. Place you outside of it where there is nothing and never will be. There is nothing but something, where am I? Amidst cosmic flutter? I am from the shadows, but I am headed towards the darkness.

I failed, rabid stream of worms covers me
Horrible lifeforms, I can't stand it
Oxygen is running out, I can't breath
My thoughts are slowly fading away

Thunderstorms

Angelcorpse - The Inexorable

Precise and explicit. A tempest not be ruined by any force, forever expanding and consuming. Destruction of a weaker species, a weaker genus, a weaker life.

Headbanging Heaven

Arghoslent - Incorrigible Bigotry

Obviously. What am I writing a description for here?

This theme became much more competitive with a select handful of albums that presented the theme from different angles. I threw this theme out there to kind of challenge the players and stand out from the "normal" and more oft explored Metal concepts (only if one is to ignore the hyper perverted lust metal often presents from this category, which I don't.)

But judging from responses it did come off as challenging. Success! As far as I'm concerned the true competition boiled down to

Ctfod: Akercocke - Goat of Mendes
SeveredMetal: Lifelover - Erotik
Born Headless: Akercocke - Antichrist
The Virtuoso: Oxbow-The Narcotic Story
Hoodoo Man: Impaled Nazarene - Tol Cormpt Norz Norz Norz
Kepulix: Soft Cell - Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret

Oxbow's The Narcotic Story blew my mind. I've read and heard this name far too many times without checking them out. I am now viciously kicking myself for not doing so. This ecstasy comes with pain which makes it incredibly genuine. An entirely unique sound that fit the theme so well it surprised me. Pleasure and pain with an insightful sound to match.

Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret performed the theme in a perfect literal sense providing sex, vice and cities of sin to a perfect rhythm of luring little disco dollies to a life of vice. I was ecstatic to see it make an appearance.

I have expressed my love for the bloody orgy goat corpse ****ing to be found in the woods of Tol Cormpt Norz Norz Norz. I especially enjoyed this submission for it's pure 100% Metal savagery, which still managed to capture many of the themes qualities. I feel like Impaled Nazarene presented dark perversions slightly more so then Sarcofago which explains the missing presence of the Brazilian boys on my list. If all of Sarcofago's songs were Tracy, it might have been a little more competitive between the two.

Here is where it gets difficult.... Akercocke - Goat of Mendes, Lifelover - Erotik and Akercocke - Antichrist.

These three albums have exactly what this theme extensively required to be among the elite. Metal, Dark, Erotic, Seduction. This is what The Tribunal wanted when it demanded to be granted entrance to the House of Ecstasy. Well done Ctfod, Severed and Born Headless.

Antichrist gives us Axiom, The Promise, My Apterous Angel, The Dark Inside and Epode. Axiom employs the single greatest use of acoustic guitar over blast beats in music ever. And the pinpoint precision strikes of the kit are provided by Mr. Gray himself who has written some of the most sexually driven lyrics in Death/Black metal history. And the greatest thing about his Satanic Sex is that he does not resort to or seem interested in the typical "rip her ****/sacrifice her/fukk for satan" themes you see in most sex Death/Black Metal. Akercocke is Satan who is dressed kill. He is intelligent. Dark. A potent air about him. When he enters a room, women draw near to partake at his altar. Nuns want to sleep with him and he plays it cool. But when he takes them the woman is not only left alive, unlike most Metal, but she is also left wanting more. But Akercocke have already left to find another woman fairer in beauty then most daughters of men.

And then there is Life Lovers Erotik.

Holy shit Erotik. Not only does Erotik fit the Theme to a tee but it also happens to be my poison of choice for meeting somewhere between Melodic Black Metal and Joy Division. This album holds many real life connections for me and thus I have a deep empathy for its sounds of self loathing and drug filled dimly lit streets. These streets house many liquor stores and it's frequented by prostitutes. But this is not a hopelessly destroyed place. It pretends that this is the normal. Or it remembers brighter times. So ever present in this album is lighthearted tinge to its sound. An almost sarcastic deprecation of its surroundings and the consequences of its drug and sex filled lifestyle. Besatt brings me to my knees. Oh my lord Besatt don't kill me.

Thinking back on the good times we had,
when we would laugh
The wind blew in your hair as we
drove across the country

But despite both of those albums immense strength in this competition, Akercocke - The Goat of Mendes is the One True pick for this theme. To pick any other album shall be decreed FOOLISH by The Tribunal, for it was the choice of the very Tribunal itself were it to compete in this mortal combat.

Goat of Mendes is the sexiest Akercocke have ever been and oh have they been awesomely sexy in their career. The seduction and erotic traits are represented 100% here without sacrificing the Metal. Two things other acts painfully try to juggle or mix and match while these British Luciferians masterfully craft a beast of equal proportions and values. This album is everything this theme embodies. I can say nothing further of its praise.

Sister Cunegonde:
"Grant me a skin for dancing in

and receive unholy jism
Goat of mendes Ahriman
carnal inspirer and lord
Infernal prophet

The scent of her hymen
potent and pure presents
temptation beyond heaven

Shemhamforash
The visible melts into the unseen
The abyss below Malkuth
Embrace vital existence
and the dark ones of the pit

Beneath the beast the naked soul
the visible melts into the unseen
between her thighs
such sweet delights

Rejoice in the fleshly life
sweet sister in darkness
Rejoice in the fleshly life

Baphomet
I am hostage to your presence
captive to your words

‘I can hear you calling
I can hear you calling me
I can hear you calling
I can hear you calling me’

Baphomet how do you touch me
when you are not here?

‘Look through my eyes
see through my eyes
I can hear you calling’

breathing next to me
ever expected, but never coming
My silent vespers in the darkness
Shadows of fate
Look through my eyes
See through my eyes
One could lose a lifetime
praying in isolation, Hidden

The beauty of its patterns

In the deep mires of the swamp,
upon a rotted oaken throne
Progbass sits and judges the legions that await him
in the pit of Your Move

Bishop of Hexen - I can see what the initial thought was here, but it certainly doesn't fit nearly as well as others.

Akercocke I am quite familiar with, and I heavily debated using Goat of Mendes as my choice for this album, but opted against it in the long run. Between Antichrist and Goat, Goat is the superior album and exudes more of the classy sleaze that the theme calls for.

Oxbow - I can see why the album was selected. It truly sounds like the throes of a dying drug addict. Unfortunately, this doesn't equate to quality.

Ghost - I can't imagine why this album was selected. Well, I can if you view the theme as a sort of 70's snuff film setting, but the album lacks any sort of conviction and punch.

The same goes for Kyuss. I am quite familiar with the album from my indie metal days, and on the whole there are just better albums that encapsulate the theme.

I was a bit confused on Heavely's Carpe Diem until I took a look at the lyrics. The lyrics are fine, but the Symphony X esque knock off music does not lend itself to the theme at all.

Impaled Nazarene - certainly a great album. It has the perversion in spades, but it seems to be missing that 5th element. A great choice though, and one I had not thought of when picking my own album.

I am not familiar with Lamp. This album seems to recall the early heavy metal and horror movie mixture that made early bands such as Pentagram and Black Sabbath great. It covers the spectrum that Impaled Nazarene seems to miss, but does so in favor of forgoing the element that IN had. A mixture of the two is surely the choice to straddle.

Sarcofago's Rotting. Right from the animal cries of orgasm in the first few seconds of the album, you know you are in for a treat. The album has the aggression and perversion of Impaled Nazarene and lyrics that are basically the crude version of Akercocke, but the homage is still paid to the early heavy metal giants. The wild howls punctuate the two vignettes and tie them together nicely.

The Ride for Revenge album seemed more suited to a filthy thematic, similar in sound to a slowed down Blasphemy. The effect that is on the vocals in a few places make it sound as if he is choking on slime, which lends credence to both the house of ectasy in a ritualistic and sex depraved mindset, but also pushes the album further into filth. Although good, it seems like this was meant for another theme.

Swallow the Sun - ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Lifelover has always been a take it or leave it sort of band, and I have been of the latter camp. I must say that they do well in covering the theme though, as they are one of the few black metal bands that can accurately capture a city scape and the seedy life within. Erotik, although not an album I like, does well to fit the theme.

Soft Cell - certainly the black sheep of the group here. It is odd, I will say that. What I can say is that the album captures the neon lights of the red light district perfectly. It reminds me of a more sociable version of Sisters of Mercy.

After much deliberation, I have chosen....

I'm giving this one to Lord Kepulix. It was a tough choice between Lifelover, Sarcofago and Soft Cell. I feel that Sarcofago is the truest of the true for metal perversion, social decay, degenerate deviancy, miscreant and depraved organized noise, but this EP falls short of the mark. Had it been INRI or The Laws of the Scourge, I would of voted for Sarcofago hands down. Lifelover I just can't get into, although the theme and Lifelover are quite easily bed mates.

that leaves Soft Cell. Not only was it a refreshing album to listen to midst the others, but it never forced the theme. Rather, these lads had the curious and villainous airs of carnal erotica throughout the album. Good job Lord Kep.

I feel like I should present my choices for House of Ecstacy & Pure Filth:

House of Ecstacy

Although Oxbox didn't necessarily make my list, I imagine Virtuoso chose it for relatively the same reasons that I picked Erotik, for that I commend him. It was a really cool album.

For me it was between a few golden albums which were:

Sacrofago - INRI

I really do enjoy the shit out of Sarcofago despite my queer, fat neck exterior. This album is no exception with tracks like Satanic Lust, Desecration of Virgin, and Ready to Fuck. It fits the bill. Although I felt there was a lot less of enjoyment as there was pure sexual perversion for the sake of perversion. Leaning me towards a loss for Sarcofago, but cool album.

Akercocke - Antichrist

This was a great choice from a great album, but I felt it spoke of Satan more as a concept of evil rather than one of Satan as a personal foray into decadence. Still a great choice.

Soft Cell - Non-stop Erotic Cabaret

Heard quite a few of these tracks already and man do they fit the theme. It seems like the album is simply about fucking, under neon lights without a condom in the heat of the moment. Like taking yourself down to an 80s themed brothel. I felt hands on my ass as I listened to this, those very hands trying to lure me into sleep so this invisible presence can have its way with me. This felt like an incredibly personal album. I felt like I picked the right album, unfortunately this wasn't it. But what a damn nice choice, Kep!

Akercocke - Goat of Mendes

Well I definitely picked this album if it wasn't obvious already. Sacrifice, hedonism and gigantic orgies. The finer pleasures in life, house of ecstasy. Sensual Satan worship, the lord of pleasures divine.

I choose Akercocke's Goat of Mendes.

Pure Filth

This was brutal to decide because it seemed like an incredibly obvious theme and people kept nailing it on the head, but ultimately I knew which one I was going to choose from the start and it held up, but here are some of my favourite picks for this theme:

Vassafor - Obsidian Codex

Maintaining a certainly obvious theme of disgust, repulsion and hatred, this album was a really solid choice. It's something new which is refreshing but it didn't necessarily epitomize what it is be filth. At parts I felt the production was too clean despite how foreboding it was, but the vocals were completely and utterly spot on. Subject matter was pretty much to be expected. Good choice but not what I choose.

Infester - To the Depths (In Degradation)

More heavy than disgusting in my eyes. It's like being submerged in lava, letting it cool and then being tossed into the sun. Black hole consumes the sun to rip you apart on a molecular level. Although the lyrics are properly disgusting, and so are the vocals. I felt bad picking another album this in the end, but I stand by my choice. Fantastic choice but not the album I chose.

Naked Whipper - Painstreaks

I own a bootleg shirt with this album on the cover and the shirt looks terrible, but I still wear it with whatever pride I have. This album fight have fit better into the House of Ecstasy category due to how sexually fanatical it is, but it's a solid album. Can't read the lyrics which hurts it a little bit, but I can imagine
it's nothing over the top with disgust.

Demilich - Nespithe

The vocals are perfect for this theme. The subject matter isn't. It isn't filthy on a human level because it's about outer space and finding yourself, believing in your true self and never giving up. Something like that. The music seems too technically proficient to really rival the lead contenders here, but it's a great album regardless.

Midnight - Satanic Royalty

This album appeals to me. It embodies what filth is to me without resorting to tumour speak, or genital mutilation. I couldn't wholeheartedly pick it over the other choices, but it really does me in and it was a great choice. YOU GIVE ME LUST, FILTH, AND SLEEEEAAZZEEE

Antediluvian/Adversarial - Initiated In Impiety as Mysteries

If this album had the content for filth, this would be my pick. Both bands are like fury incarnate. Unfortunately I didn't view it as such in the lyrical aspect. The album invokes terror of the highest caliber, but not quite what the theme is looking for.

Pungent Stench - Been Caught Buttering

One of the grooviest albums ever (also one of my favourite), and certainly repulsive. The cover has one dead guy's head cut in half locked into a french kiss. Beautiful. The content is there and it has the filthy gutterals needed to succeed. Something is missing about this album though, and it's probably having to do with the album focusing a lot on cheap laughs, like taking potshots at Obama and talking about airport security. *hold for applause* I think it is funny album though, might taint my perceptions.

Profanatica - Profanatitas De Domonatia

I like Ledney's music a lot of the time, and this album is no exception with its perversion. But Ledney is a try hard and although this album has aspects of being filthy, it doesn't make the cut for me.

Which leads to my top three picks:

Dragged Into Sunlight - Hatred for Mankind

Stepping into the throes of perversion, and disgust, this album captures what it truly means to be one of the most hateful albums known to man. Unfortunately it suffers in the lyrical department. The host mother giving birth to a putrid child is a great cover and the music suits this theme perfectly though.

Carcass - Symphonies of Sickness

This was gross. Having listened to it before, I felt the exact same about it. It's my favourite Carcass album and even in the opening track you get the most vile vocals known to man, as if Jeff was belching bloody mucus. I don't even have to talk about the content because it discusses medical abnormalities and general grossness, but it's nice to have there.

Cryptopsy - None So Vile

It seems like an obvious choice because it is, but where this album is supposed to be filthy, it spends most of its time being sophisticated. Blasphemy Made Flesh would have gotten my vote because I genuinely find it more repulsive, whereas None So Vile just has the lyrical content, as it is fairly polished, albeit heavy.

I changed my entry, I am voting for Carcass - Symphonies of Sickness

My idea of this theme is probably really different than others, so if I missed how you meant for the album to relate to the theme then I am sorry.

The Virtuoso: Oxbow-The Narcotic Story
New album for me. I actually love how well this fits the theme, wow. This is pretty close to what I imagined the theme as. I'll definitely listen to this one more.

Emenius Sleepus: Ghost (Opus Eponymous)
Not sure if I can really hear where you are coming from with this album. Not a fan of Ghost to begin with, so I can't really say that it leaves me wanting more, either.

Kytokinesis: Heavenly - Carpe Diem
Heavenly are cool. Hot chicks are cool. Not sure if I see where this album is related to this theme, either. Sweet album though.

Born Headless: Akercocke - Antichrist
Decent choice. I definitely hear where you're coming from on this one. Only problem is that it doesnt really have the sexual feeling I would look for with this theme.

ChemicalFire: Kyuss - ...And the Circus Leaves Town
Nicely fuzzy, but not dark or erotic. Nice album though. I might be being really picky for the theme, im not sure.

Hoodoo Man: Impaled Nazarene - Tol Cormpt Norz Norz Norz
I like this album a lot, actually. I'll definitely listen to it more. Very solid choice, fits the theme fairly well.

Progbass: Sarcofago - INRI
Good album, and fits the theme decently. Nice choice.

\Powerslave/: The Lamp of Thoth - Portents, Omens, and Dooms
Great album and band. Fits the theme fairly well.

The Wildchild: Sarcófago - Rotting
Sarcofago are pretty beast, I really should listen to them more. Solid choice.

Metal_Head1: Ride for Revenge - Under the Eye
Definitely would fit Filth better, wow what a sound. Definitely checking them out more, but they don't fit the theme.

Morphogenesis26: Swallow The Sun - The Morning Never Came
eh doesn't really fit the theme, and I'm not a huge fan of the band either.

Kepulix: Soft Cell - Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret
Great, GREAT pick. Fits the theme I was imagining very well. My only complaint is that it is not very dark, but otherwise it is bang on.

severed-metal: Lifelover - Erotik
Started to listen to these guys a lot more, and I was actually contemplating using this album. Fits my idea of House of Ecstacy perfectly, but I was not sure how it would have gone over with others.

ctfod: Akercocke - Goat of Mendes
Not bad at all, but I like Anitchrist better in regards to the theme, and overall.

This leads me to my top 3,

severed-metal: Lifelover - Erotik
Kepulix: Soft Cell - Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret
The Virtuoso: Oxbow-The Narcotic Story

I'm going with Lifelover - Erotik.

Well, this was a problematic one. I don't feel like writing too long paragraphs about this, but there appeared to be many different interpretations of the theme. For me, it was first and foremost about seduction and drug-induced hazy sexual pleasure. Many of the albums in my opinion represented either too violent (Sarcofago, Impaled Nazarene) or introspective and desperate (Oxbow, Lifelover) an interpretation. Musically I guess it doesn't surprise many that TLoT is my favourite. Yet while there's a healthy dose of virgin seduction and fucking performed on an altar, there's also many other forms of British debauchery that are not (directly) related to the theme in question.

Then there's Akercocke. This is the first time I have actually given this band a proper listen. The Goat of Mendes is certainly violent, but it fairly well succeeds in seduction as well. Antichrist... Well, I guess it's a gayer, Opeth-isized version of The Goat.
I conclude by giving my vote to the best album presented for the theme, Soft Ce... I vote for Akercocke's The Goat of Mendes.

#tooth&claw
Many great albums presented in this theme. Most, I think, missed the mark in the respect that they were too anthropocentric. Ildjarn, being the misanthrope that he is, doesn't give a damn about mankind. The raw and organic aggression of Forest Poetry is an outstanding candidate for this theme.
I vote for Ildjarn's Forest Poetry.

#memoriesfromanotherworld
Well... many great albums here. Summoning makes me feel the breeze of Middle-Earth's otherwordly winds.
I give my vote to Summoning's Dol Guldur.

Listening to that Dragged Into Sunlight album made me almost feel physically ill.
I vote for Dragged Into Sunlight - Hatred For Mankind.

A lot of really good choices, but I'm going to focus on the five I thought were the strongest.

Heavy Load - Stronger Than Evil

This was a really good choice in that it's filled with a fair amount of catchy riffs and anthemic sections. With riffs like the intros to Singing Swords and Saturday Night, it can really kick your ass, but there didn't seem to be enough of them and album focused more around loud, sing-a-long chorus's that, while very catchy and infectious, don't give me that, "just get and bang your head" vibe all the way through like I was hoping.

Brocas Helm - Defender Of The Crown

A lot of badass riffs in this one. It seems like every song has one massive riff that comes in and breaks your balls and lyrics about kicking the shit out of life. The issue with this one, however, is that every song seems to only have that one massive riff and everything falls flat after it, adding the very repetitive sound throughout the whole album where each song is easily predicted based on the one before. Skull****er is a killer song, though.

Cryptopsy - None So Vile

I enjoy this album a fair bit and have for quite awhile, so I was happy to see it on here. This album has the riffs and the spirit of the theme, but it just doesn't seem to last long enough. Every riff sticks with you, but the speed makes it blur into the next one and you don't really get a chance to bask in how awesome the riffs and grooves really are.

These here are the two I really had a tough time between:

Slayer - Show No Mercy

A ****ing classic of metal. Riffs riffs and more riffs is what this album is all about. Any metal bands coming out today need to listen to this album to understand how to write a good godamn metal record. Each song is based on stacking riff on riff with drums finding the perfect accent points to give you that punch you need to make a riff stick with you, plus the vocals just make you wanna stand up and shout these blasphemous tunes to skies.

Arghoslent - Incorrigible Bigotry

Know how I said modern metal bands should listen to Show No Mercy above? That's what Arghoslent did and did it ****ing right. They took the idea of riff after riff to write songs and injected steroids into it. This album does one thing better than Show No Mercy, and that's that each section where I said, "**** yeah!" on SNM is tripled. There's a subtle intricacy to the drums that SNM doesn't have as well and the vocals have this tone that, to me, works much better than Arya's to keep you moving.

Arghoslent's Incorrigible Biotry is my winner for this category. Good job, severed.

ChemicalFire: Terra Tenebrosa - The Tunnels
I heard a passively interesting creepiness here. I'll be revisiting the album out of curiosity but it did not feel as filthy as other contenders. I'm curious as to what type of filth you hear in this album. I feel like a lot of their songs sound like they are about to snap from mental tension, but nothing really filthy. Regardless anything that I come back to a second time is worth a thanks.

Powerslave: Antediluvian/Adversarial - Initiated In Impiety as Mysteries
Definitely a recent favorite of mine. An ancient cyclopean end to galaxies. The sound of reality being bent. Fukking hail Dissolution Spires and that ending. Not as much filthy as it is overwhelming for me.

Helloween4Ever: Cryptopsy - None So Vile
One of my absolute favorites from the heavily percussive style of Death Metal, this is an absolute savage attack happy beast of an album. While able to move at the frantic pace of dying, this album has the sophisticated air of Patrick Bateman at times. A great choice but its attack style of Death gives me a mental picture that, while plenty distasteful, might not be as pure filth as required.

Emenius Sleepus: Vassafor (Obsidian Codex)
Wonderful listen. Sits somewhere between Esoteric, Incantation, and Antediluvian. A colossal force of impossible dark. Very much enjoyed this though it's more awful and awesome then it is disgustingly filthy to these ears.

Kytokinesis: Midnight - Satanic Royalty
Born Headless: Carcass - Symphonies of Sickness
Kepulix: Profanatica - Profanatitas De Domonatia
severed-metal: Sextrash - Sexual Carnage
ctfod: Pungent Stench - Been Caught Buttering

Filthy as **** albums in their own respective ways. Satanic Royalty brings the greatest occult sleaze we have seen in years. Symphonies of Sickness is a pathological classic of medical grade A gore. Ledney shits and pisses his way to the sacrilegious Olympics. Sextrash gets all the venereal diseases. And Pungent Stench stinks of farts.

The Wildchild: Infester - To the Depths, in Degradation
Metal_Head1: Infester - To the Depths, in Degradation
Morphogenesis26: Dragged Into Sunlight - Hatred For Mankind

These three players had this theme by the balls if you ask me. This theme was incredibly competitive and I want to congratulate the players for giving me such a pleasant challenge.

Hatred For Mankind is a god damn fukking filthy album in every possible way I could have asked for it. Physical, mental, emotional and spiritual filth are represented in every possible shape and form. This album retches forth a world of absolute terrible breadth. And I mean truly terrible in the literal sense of the word. This album is firmly rooted in reality despite its fantastical imagery and symbolism which makes it that much more horrifying. My thoughts on this album have been penned before in an 1973 short story by Ursula K. Le Guin, The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas.

In a basement under one of the beautiful public buildings of Omelas, or perhaps in the cellar of one of its spacious private homes, there is a room. It has one locked door, and no window. A little light seeps in dustily between cracks in the boards, secondhand from a cobwebbed window somewhere across the cellar. In one corner of the little room a
couple of mops, with stiff, clotted, foul-smelling heads stand near a rusty bucket. The
floor is dirt, a little damp to the touch, as cellar dirt usually is. The room is about three
paces long and two wide: a mere broom closet or disused tool room. In the room a child
is sitting. It could be a boy or a girl. It looks about six, but actually is nearly ten. It is
feeble-minded. Perhaps it was born defective, or perhaps it has become imbecile
through fear, malnutrition, and neglect. It picks its nose and occasionally fumbles
vaguely with its toes or genitals, as it sits hunched in the corner farthest from the bucketand the two mops. It is afraid of the mops. It finds them horrible. It shuts its eyes, but it knows the mops are still standing there; and the door is locked; and nobody will come.

The door is always locked; and nobody ever comes, except that sometimes--the child
has no understanding of time or interval--sometimes the door rattles terribly and opens,
and a person, or several people, are there. One of them may come in and kick the child
to make it stand up. The others never come close, but peer in at it with frightened,
disgusted eyes. The food bowl and the water jug are hastily filled, the door is locked, the
eyes disappear. The people at the door never say anything, but the child, who has not
always lived in the tool room, and can remember sunlight and its mother's voice,
sometimes speaks. "I will be good," it says. "Please let me out. I will be good!" They
never answer. The child used to scream for help at night, and cry a good deal, but now
it only makes a kind of whining, "eh-haa, eh-haa," and it speaks less and less often. It is
so thin there are no calves to its legs; its belly protrudes; it lives on a half-bowl of corn
meal and grease a day. It is naked. Its buttocks and thighs are a mass of festered
sores, as it sits in its own excrement continually.

They all know it is there, all the people of Omelas. Some of them have come to see it,
others are content merely to know it is there. They all know that it has to be there. Some
of them understand why, and some do not, but they all understand that their happiness,
the beauty of their city, the tenderness of their friendships, the health of their children,
the wisdom of their scholars, the skill of their makers, even the abundance of their
harvest and the kindly weathers of their skies, depend wholly on this child's abominable
misery.

And with all that flourish said and done, there is a reason why To The Depths, In Degradation was put up by TWO players; One of them being The Wildchild who is a respected purveyor of filth and sleaze.

Quote by Stranglehold
The riffs on that album sound like the essence of liquid arse rope, generated by a bad kebab. Filth.

I live in the American Gardens Building on W. 81st Street on the 11th floor. My name is Herr Progbass. I'm 24 years old. I believe in taking care of myself and a balanced diet and rigorous exercise routine. In the morning, if my face is a little puffy I'll put on an ice pack while doing stomach crunches. I can do 1000 now. After I remove the ice pack, I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower I use a water activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply an herb-mint facial mask which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion. There is an idea of a Progbass; some kind of abstraction. But there is no real me: only an entity, something illusory. And though I can hide my cold gaze, and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable... I simply am not there.

That said, American Psycho will be the benchmark for this vote.

Let's be honest here, there are really only 2 albums duking it out - Infester's magnum opus of death metal and Carcass's exquisite grind masterpiece - Symphonies of Sickness.

Rather than waste my time listing while others don't fit nearly well as these two, I'm going to just compare the two and choose that way.

Cover Art - Infester has impaled bodies crying out in darkness while being suspended over a pool of blood or lava. Carcass has various illustrations of the human anatomy as taken from medical encyclopedias.

Production - Infester has a very clear production for 1994; a nice open and organic mix that doesn't sound sterile. Each instrument is heard (especially the bass, which certainly lends to the lurking filth aspect) and the guitars have a dark fuzz sound to them, with a nice rounded sound to that seems to attract dirt like those adhesive fly strips. Carcass has something special with Symphonies though - although the album was released in 1989, it has a superior sound that is both crisp and filthy. Every instrument is clearly heard, and the guitars have that classic distortion that defies disgusting. The vocals accentuate this with added effects and variations that sound like the belching of slime to the gasses escaping a newly exhumed cadaver.

Music - This is where I am torn. Obviously, both of these albums sit very highly on list of greatest metal albums ever made - and I commend all warriors who rallied under their signs for the coming battle.

Infester has what can be seen as one of the greatest mid paced death metal compositions ever to grace us. The riffs retain the oppressive and morbid atmosphere while the drums and bass keep pace - oft seen alternating between slower or faster tempos as the energy of the riffs dictate. This is one of those albums with no compositional flaws, and the music was made by people who truly love and understand the heavy metal ethos.

Carcass made the sonic equivalent of a serial killer. The album is literally a playful romp into the mind of an utterly depraved and sanguine psychopath. The album puts you on the gurney, kept alive by intravenous fluids as the mad butcher preps his scalpel and saws with the glint of necrotic hunger in his eye. The album is the horror of his larder, the fats and slimes that have congealed upon the gritty tile floor and have become one with the grout. The guitars cut like the rusty scalpel, the cymbals crash like his unclean fingernails scraping across your cranium, the bass a distorted mess like your once continuous intestinal tract, and the snare snaps like the sound of your rib cage being ripped open. This album is like a putrid pile of vomit and shit. I want to wax on about this release, but it is an experience that is best left for the individual.

I want to say that I considered Infester, which I did....

but only for a brief moment. Carcass has always been the kings of rottedness and decay, lords of feculence and hostel smut, champions of soiled excrement and slime from beneath the mires of sleaze.

Symphonies of Sickness extracts the vote from me much as my tendons are ripped from my joints and my muscles removed to be feasted upon by Bill Steer and crew.

What I was looking for in this album was a mixture of sounds that conjured images of nature yet was primal and vicious. The album I had in mind would be somewhere between the bluntness of Fallen Angel of Doom's full frontal assault and the lyrics of Black Lake Niðstång;

"Our shadows seep into the dusk
Like cranes that melt into the pool;
A black lake in which they descend
Pale ghosts caress the nidstång in the dark
Its face scarred by the ages,
Its curse sent with heathen breath

Where have all the noble cranes gone?
Where have all the stags disappeared to?
Piled below in the tomb of this burdened pool
A curse to those who corrupt these sacred woods
A curse to those who taste this solemn water

Actually, I wanted this album to be a Niðstång from the primal force itself, "nature."

I had in mind an album that was nature doing what it did best, which was fighting back and surviving. Something primal and vicious. Ferocious and instinctual. Blunt and savage. Maybe even primitive. Yet ideally it would also retain subtle cues of its natural majesty. Something to make it stand out as an avatar of the elements; Of Nature. Call it a natural magic if you will.

\Powerslave/: Autumnal Winds - Venerari Sacra Mysteri
Excellent EP that really shows exactly what I meant by Nature sounding. The production lends itself to the lush atmosphere and song titles like Entombed By Moss further influence the "green" sound.

ChemicalFire: Converge: Jane Doe
This captures the wonderfully frantic violence I had in mind of Tooth & Claw's aggression. Something that attacked without hesitation, moved at full speed and has an instinctual disposition toward tearing your teeth out with its throat.

Now lets us explore the albums that fall right in the middle of these two.

severed-metal: Ulver - Nattens Madrigal - aatte hymne til ulven i manden
Ah now we're in the realms of Tooth & Claw! Quite literally since this was recorded in a forest but who cares. Despite how ever you feel about the production on this album it 100% lends itself to the snow coated woodsy feel for myself. Sparse acoustic work and lyrical direction also further the Nature effect.

Hoodoo Man: Ildjarn - Forest Poetry
Very much a similar effect to "Nattens..." this album is a little less Woodsy little more teeth around your jugular. The simple use of chords to form frantic riffs actually lends itself to a droning feel when taken in as an album. This album is your stupid fleshy pink body being bent beneath the one true law of Tooth & Claw... but

Kepulix: Arckanum - ÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞ
Is the sound of Earth's Natural Chaos Forces hitting the F5 button. This is a global chaos blizzard in which only few shaman foretold of. This is black ravens jutting out from spontaneous chasms and blotting out the ash and snow filled sky. This is ancient gods from antediluvian times when man knew his natural place in the normality of chaos. And when the cancer and blight has been cleared by this unequaled wrath, trees will sprout; grass will grow; and the rightful heirs of this planet will continue without us.

I vote for Arckanum - ÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞ

A lot of great choices for this one.
The Virtuoso: Naked Whipper- Pain Streaks
Grime-y as fukk. Very deadly choice man, definitely stuff for when i'm in the mood.

Emenius Sleepus: Vassafor (Obsidian Codex)
Murky and heavy and slimey, nice choice. Thick as molases as well. Pretty much what I imagined when I thought of the theme.

Kytokinesis: Midnight - Satanic Royalty
Fun, fun stuff man, but not really filthy enough for me. I might have a bit of a bias towards death and/or black metal on this one, however.

Born Headless & Progbass: Carcass - Symphonies of Sickness
Almost certain I saw these guys at a festival at one point, and was moshing like no other. Deadly stuff.

ChemicalFire: Terra Tenebrosa - The Tunnels
Not murky enough for me, and not really my kind of music either.

Hoodoo Man: Demilich - Nespithe
Quite frankly, this one would have worked for headbangers heaven as well as it does for filth. What an album.

\Powerslave/: Antediluvian/Adversarial - Initiated In Impiety as Mysteries
"Holy shit" were the first words out of my mouth when this played. Deadly, DEADLY stuff here man.

The Wildchild & Metal_Head1: Infester - To the Depths, in Degradtion
Nice stuff. Nothing more to say, just a very solid choice.

Morphogenesis26: Dragged Into Sunlight - Hatred For Mankind
Pure hatred. Filthy. Nice.

Kepulix: Profanatica - Profanatitas De Domonatia
Nice pick, murky and dark.

severed-metal: Sextrash - Sexual Carnage
dirty and filthy. Doesn't have the sound, though.

ctfod: Pungent Stench - Been Caught Buttering
Solid album in its own right, and fairly filthy.

This leaves me with my top 3:

The Virtuoso: Naked Whipper- Pain Streaks
Dragged Into Sunlight - Hatred For Mankind
Demilich - Nespithe

I'm going with: The Virtuoso: Naked Whipper- Pain Streaks

#tooth&claw
The Virtuoso: Heavy Load- Death or Glory
Absolutely legendary. I've spun this one hundreds of times, and it never gets old. Perfect album for going to battle.

Emenius Sleepus: Witchrist (Beheaded Ouroboros)
Massive sounding album. More of the sound I had in mind when the theme was released.

Kytokinesis: Astrofaes - Those Whose Past is Immortal
Primal, very cool stuff man.

Born Headless: Primordial - The Gathering Wilderness
Love these guys. Nice and primal as well.

ChemicalFire: Converge: Jane Doe
Doesn't really fit my idea of Tooth&claw, and not huge on these guys.

Hoodoo Man: Ildjarn - Forest Poetry
Awesome stuff man, I like this.

Progbass: Immortal's Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism
Another legendary album. Sweet choice, one of my favs.

\Powerslave/: Autumnal Winds - Venerari Sacra Mysteria
Cool stuff, seems like I have a different idea of the theme than most again, however.

The Wildchild: Lust - Genesis of a Satanic Race
Barbaric as fukk. Is this the band with that album cover that riffmast kept posting? haha.

Metal_Head1: Cirith Ungol - One Foot In Hell
Deadly album, another one for battle. Killer stuff.

Morphogenesis26: Aspid - Extravasation
thrashy stuff, definitely worth a listen again. Not huge on the fit, however.

Kepulix: Arckanum - ÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞ
I've always wondered how they decided how many Þ they put in the name. Anyways, very good choice for the theme. Primal, fast, deadly.

severed-metal: Ulver - Nattens Madrigal - aatte hymne til ulven i manden
fukking deadly man. Another great choice.

ctfod: Bestial Mockery - Evoke the Desecrator
Shit, thought I filled this one in. Fun album, but gets overshadowed by other albums for this theme.

Top 3:

severed-metal: Ulver - Nattens Madrigal - aatte hymne til ulven i manden
Kepulix: Arckanum - ÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞ
Emenius Sleepus: Witchrist (Beheaded Ouroboros)

I'm not going to go into detail about each album on this, because I think it will simply devolve into 'this album is great, but not quite as great as this one'.

There were a lot of brilliant choices in this category, and at first I thought I was going to have a hard time deciding. Ample Destruction, Show No Mercy, Final Holocaust and Warning Of Danger in particular were great contenders and I could easily have picked any of them. But then, in swooped None So Vile at the last minute, and I kicked myself for not having thought of it in the first place.

This album has the riffs to go toe to toe with anything else here, reinforced by ferocious drumming that builds a labyrinth of grooves. Cryptopsy don't just invoke the crushing weight of death, but absolutely revel in the slaughter, making this one of the most fun death metal albums ever made.

The emphasis is on rhythm in the style of Deicide and Suffocation, building grooves through the interaction of guitar and drums and then tearing them down with violent tempo changes. The music never sits still, so there is always some new irresistable riff to bang your head to, and that is why this album rises to the top here.

I vote for Cryptopsy - None So Vile

Too busy with other things to properly do a write up for each album.

On the whole, I was a little disappointed . I was expecting a larger number of pure, glorious heavy metal releases. I'm going to go with the classic:

Jag Panzer - Ample Destruction.

Giving this one over to Kep. Lots of pretty damn solid choices. I was pleasantly surprised here, much moreso than headbanging heaven.

The Virtuoso: Blind Guardian-Nightfall in Middle Earth
Amazing album. Pretty much perfect for this theme.

Emenius Sleepus: Gontyna Kry (Welowie)
Solid album, pretty good stuff. Only problem is that it takes me to Ukraine/Russia circa 1500's instead of another world.

Kytokinesis: Malory - Not Here Not Now
Never really liked shoegaze or whatever that is. Doesn't really take me to another world, just some indie movie's opening credits.

Born Headless & \Powerslave/: The Lord Weird Slough Feg - Traveller
Great album. Fun stuff, makes me think of an alternate universe, where dogmen rule.

ChemicalFire: Bal-Sagoth - The Cthonic Chronicles
Not huge on Bal Sagoth. Not bad though, and fits the theme fairly well.

Hoodoo Man: Summoning - Dol Guldur
Great album by the gods. Takes me to a Tolkien-esque world, just as the album is meant to.

Progbass: Obliveon's From This Day Forward.
Cool stuff. Nice and crunchy thrash, but not taking me to another world.

The Wildchild: Semilanceata - En wallmoburen myhr, där döön grödha mellom bitter root ok frucht
Interesting stuff, no doubt. Kinda makes me think of a a forest at night in The Witcher. Nice.

Metal_Head1: Gris - Il était une forêt...
Cool stuff, never really checked these guys out before. Doens't take me to a far away world, though.

Morphogenesis26: The Angelic Process - Weighing Souls With Sand
Pretty big sound. Makes me think of a planet of nothing but sand. Nice.

Kepulix: Cult of Fire - मृत्यु का तापसी अनुध्यान
Cool album. As a whole it does a good job, more like an alien planet of robots.

severed-metal: Unholy - From the Shadows
Seems like an empty plane, devoid of anything. Just blackness. Great stuff.

ctfod: Adramalech - Psychostasia
I like Adramelch better. Good album, but doesn't take me to another world.

Top 3:

The Virtuoso: Blind Guardian-Nightfall in Middle Earth
Hoodoo Man: Summoning - Dol Guldur
severed-metal: Unholy - From the Shadows

I'm going with The Virtuoso: Blind Guardian-Nightfall in Middle Earth

In the same boat as Metal_Head1 - been really short on time, so just votes will have to do for now. If I get a chance I'll write a more detailed description for each a bit later.

#house of ecstasy
Soft Cell - Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret

#pure filth
Infester - To the Depths...

#tooth and claw
Arckanum - ÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞ

#headbanging heaven
Midnight - Satanic Royalty

#thunderstorms
Order From Chaos - Stillbirth Machine (something I've actually considered putting down for this, it's definitely suited as the sound that splits the sky)

#memories from another world
Gris - Il Etait Une Foret

#album art
Kathaaria - The Complex Void of Negativity

I've selected a short list for each of these to comment on in a little detail.

#houseofecstasy

Oxbow - The Narcotic Story
This album is cloying and suffocating, dragging the listener down with it as it overdoses and wheezes out its last breaths. It feels like the aftermath of decadence and hedonism, but it doesn't quite capture the pleasure itself.

Ride for Revenge - Under the Eye
This was an interesting surprise to see chosen in this category. It didn't occur to me when I was making my choice, but the quality that defines Ride for Revenge for me is seduction. Each song sets up a hypnotic rhythm that worms its way into the listener's mind as it builds until it is difficult to tear yourself away.

Akercocke - Goat of Mendes
This album is the sound of a satanic cult, robed and masked, surrounded by candles, engaging in perverse rituals to win the favour of Satan. The deviations from occult death metal into softer, throbbing passages enhance some of the imagery of the lyrics, but it doesn't quite manage to be as explicit as some of the other choices.

Sarcofago - Rotting
Sarcofago - INRI
Both of these capture the thrusting malevolence of this band as they slaughter their way through sluts and virgins. Rotting has a touch more subtlety but INRI is the better choice of the two because of its unrestrained sexual aggression.

Soft Cell - Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret
This stands head and shoulders above the rest of the albums in this category. It is the sound of neon lights, alleyways and 'seedy films'. Each night the characters lose themselves in a world where their darkest desires are realised. In the cold light of day they seem to sense their encroaching self-destruction, which only spurs them on to further indulgence. This album doesn't just suggest the theme in its lyrics, it openly states it in its decadent synths and strutting dancefloor rhythms, luring disco dollies to a life of vice...

I vote for Soft Cell - Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret

#purefilth

Naked Whipper- Pain Streaks
Filthy, grinding destruction. Slaughter, rape and gore. I think that about sums it up.

Sextrash - Sexual Carnage
A simpler version of Sarcofago, this would have been a good choice for House of Ecstasy too. This is carnage indeed: steeped in perversion, but more inclined to rip virgins into bloody pieces than to simply fukk them.

Antediluvian/Adversarial - Initiated In Impiety as Mysteries
This is primarily on the strengh of the Antediluvian side of the split. The riffs are contorted into nightmarish shapes and the production is dense and shrouded. You can feel the slime oozing down the subterranian, geometrically impossible walls of whatever nether-realm this emerged from.

Profanatica - Profanatitas De Domonatia
This band revels in anything that christians despise, and all of their releases spew filth from every orifice. The glorious riffs that Profanatica always bring are here, perhaps at their most magnificent, but had the choice been Disgusting Blasphemies Against God it might have reached the top spot in this theme in terms of sheer blood and cum splattering perversion.

Infester - To the Depths, in Degradation
I very nearly gave the top spot to this album. It is a nightmarish masterpiece that twists riffs through shrouded labyrinths. Brief glimpses of melody flicker in the dark until they emerge in their full, horrific forms. There is a demonic presence here that reviles the pure, seeking to corrupt it with infernal powers. Twisted and malignant, certainly, but not quite the most suited.

Carcass - Symphonies of Sickness
This album is the sound of blood, pus and bile pulsing through exposed guts and veins. It feels like being immersed in a tank of still warm organs and viscera, thrashing around in gore splattered grooves. It shows us the filth inside our own bodies by ripping it out and spraying it over the walls.

I vote for Carcass - Symphonies of Sickness

Kind of busy and want to get these in before I forget, so I'm casting the rest of my votes now. If you're really that interested in why I picked what I picked, PM me and I'll answer any questions and my reasoning for choosing it.

#tooth&claw
#memoriesfromanotherworld
#thunderstorms
#headbangingheaven
#bonusround

Tooth & Claw: Ildjarn - Forest Poetry
Memories From Another World: Semilanceata - En wallmoburen myhr, där döön grödha mellom bitter root ok frucht
Thunderstorms: Order From Chaos - Stillbirth Machine
Headbanging Heaven: Midnight - Satanic Royalty
Bonus Round: Morbid Angel - Blessed are the Sick

Well shit, I've fallen behind. I'll edit in why I chose each album later.

#thunderstorms
I'm going with ctfod: Raventale - На хрустальных качелях
This album has the depressing feel of thunderstorms down, and is really good to boot. Obvious choice for me.

#headbangingheaven
I'm going with Kytokinesis: Heavy Load - Stronger Than Evil
Pure fukking 80's metal. I had to choose a Heavy Metal album on principle, and this was the best of the bunch. Originally chose Tyrant, but Heavy Load is absolutely deadly. Perfect choice.

#bonusround
I'm going with Kepulix: While Heaven Wept - Vast Oceans Lachrymose
What can I say about one of my favourite albums of all time. Fits the theme beautifully, almost as beautiful as the album cover. Quite frankly, nothing came remotely close to this.

HELLEDIT:
Updated with reasonings, and changed my vote.
