So I finally got a new PC, Acer Aspire V5 w/6GB RAM, an i5 processor and 500GB HD, touch screen and Windows 8.1...so that's cool.

But what do I do now? I have security software installed, but what other free stuff should I install? I used to use Firefox, but should I go with Chrome???

What's the deal with this Steam business?

Any ideas for-ahem-torrent sites?

Any good recent/upcoming PC games?

Help me make the best of this, guys (and ladehs)!

That would be lovely Mr. House. Previously, I was using something that starts with a "v" and rhymes with booze.

Buy the Walking Dead Season 1+2 and you'll have enough feels for 9 years.

(The video game, not the tv series)

I've always preferred Chrome. You should try it.

EDIT: AVAST is a decent free antivirus if you ever run out.

Steam is a wonderful place you install for free. It holds your games, like achievements and friends etc. At the moment Steam is having some ridiculous xmas sales going on. Picked up The Witcher 1 and 2 for just £5.48 together! And Telltales Walking Dead for under £6 and gonna get Skyrim for like £3.75!

I don't really torrent things, I prefer to stream. LetMeWatchThis has been gone for a few weeks now, so if anyone knows a good replacement let me know. Maybe try Netflix or LoveFilm 1 month trial?

Go with Chrome! Hands down the best browser available. Haven't used anything else in years. Also, if you should ever run out of anti-virus, I use Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and it works wonders. Both Chrome and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware are free programs.

In terms of other free programs, iTunes and Spotify are always a great place to start.

To transfer over your data, I would recommend an external hard drive. I have a 500GB one myself, which ran me about 60 dollars, if I remember correctly. That might sound expensive, but having a backup of all your stuff will pay for itself should something ever happen to your computer!

And about the videos games - I've never tried Steam, but I have heard a lot of good things about it. Also, Bioshock Infinite.

I've actually done this. Pretty damn useful, because I'm away from the internet for a lot of the year.

You can download Windows own Anti-virus for free- which is actually pretty damned good. Forgotten what it's called but it's included with all new Windows machines I think.

As for external harddrives, I got a WD Elements 1TB for about £60 on Amazon.co.uk. It's great because it doesn't need a power supply- you just plug it into the USB and go. Only problem with stuff like that is that you can have it formatted for EITHER Windows or Mac - not both, so I'd go with copying your itunes library bit by bit onto a 16GB memory stick or something and pasting it into the right folder on your new laptop. Then just add the folder via itunes.

If you're sick of itunes (it got real glitchy and some 'updates' removed features I used so I hate it now), then MediaGo is a really good program, especially if you have any sony hardware.

I just got a new laptop too and my old computer has like 144GB of music and all I have is a 32GB flash drive to switch things over with. Gonna be a pain in the ass.

laptop gaming is kinda crappy. you need a gaming laptop/ decent mobile graphics card if you really want to play new games at decent frames/ resolution.

stick with the old school stuff for games

i use both firefox and chrome but have been using chrome a lot more recently

I personally hate Chrome and have had a lot of problems with it. Much prefer the look and feel of Firefox along with its add-ons. By all means try it and see which one you prefer though.

If you are planning on gaming, I highly recommend a decent mouse and possibly a keyboard.

As for games, anything source-engined based will run very nicely such as Left 4 Dead, Half Life 2 and Counter Strike. As someone said, L4D is currently free to play on Steam and its always on sale for cheap. Its a fantastic co-op game and not too bad single player either. I would stay away from things like Battlefield 4 and Skyrim as they are quite intensive applications for a laptop to run. I'm sure they would run ok on the lower settings if you can deal with it

Eh, Chrome is good but Firefox is still more standard-compliant as far as I know, and also runs pretty fast so long as you don't over-load it. Also, Firefox has tab-groups (which I use a ton). Or, try Sleipnir 5 - basically runs on Chromium's Blink engine but looks like a Mac app.

Definitely Steam. Just install it. It's nice. If you're going to game, I recommend a mouse - even a cheap one is better in my opinion.

SSD is the best single thing you can do to improve. If you can, take the drive out of the Mac and put it in there - easier than transferring. Otherwise, USB 3?

I think GP6 Lite has free licenses going around?

Download VLC Player.

That's all I can think of for now.

EDIT: Delete any programs you aren't going to use, or which are the kind which look like they're useful but are actually week-long trials or whatever. Just clean up the installed progams.
#26
Yeah, I can already tell Firefox is better on 8.1 than Chrome. (EDIT: Like a million times better)

I need to get VLC. That was my jam even back in the day.

Then I think I'm back to DOTA.

Since it is a laptop, it probably has crappy onboard graphics. You won't be able to play any AAA new games, but indie games are your friend. Lots of great ones (most better than AAA games anyways).

Mine from 5 years ago still works great. My girlfriend has been through 2 in 6 years and they both still work fine. Try to avoid dodgy porn sites, they give you bad viruses, bro.

I dl'd L4D2 and I should get TF2.

I'll definitely have to get a mouse and shit if I want to do any sort of FPS or even lots of RTS games.

But what about media? I've got VLC for video, but is that also a good audio tool comparable to the basic functions of iTunes?

And I believe I (stupidly) formatted my external hard drive when I first got it exclusively for Mac, is there any way I can still retrieve everything on there onto my new PC? (putting things back on my macbook temporarily is certainly an option).

I'm also pumped to realize it came with a port so I can hook up my old desktop monitor as well for dat double screen action.

There are some recover programs which you could try. but theres no ensurance that you will get files back, or if you can get them back, they might be damaged.
Google for a program named Recuva by a company named Piriform.

Most of my music is on my laptop and just doubled on my external, then I've got some shows and movies I could always torrent again. So I might just be better putting that stuff on my macbook and try transferring of a wireless network.

I'm just thinking out loud now. I guess I want to figure out the most convenient way for me to do this.
