Heya Pit,
So our band is having a concert in three months and I've been thinking about some songs that would definitely get the crowd jumping. It's a school rock festival that will take place at my school, so the audience is around 16-20 years old. Last two years there were like 500-600 people. As a band we've had just one concert with 80 people, where we played Led Zeppelin - Rock'n'Roll, Stairway to Heaven (we have not the failed the greatest song in the world!) and Drist - Pollute The Sound with some improvisation here and there.
Right now we are thinking about having just me as a guitarist or also another guy which has insane soloing skills (from my point of view), the bad thing about him being that he only listens to oldies, rejecting any other genres, so having him in the band limits our setlist just to oldies.
So we have me as a guitarist, a bass player, a drummer and a vocalist who can also play guitar and piano.
I was thinking of songs like RATM - Killing In The Name Of, AC/DC - Thunderstruck, Metallica - Enter Sandman.
Any other songs that would work just as well? Throw'em at me!

ACDC and Metallica count as oldies? Jesus Christ, I'm getting old.

How about Sweet Home Alabama, Black Dog and Knocking on Heaven's Door?

Does that come with the fan to blow your hair about when you solo?

Someone who rejects music based on the decade it was released? Doesn't sound very good.

OT: Find someone with a sax and play Dream Theater's Another Day. Everyone loves some sax.

people would lose their shit.

Some blink 182 will work, dammit, all the small things etc, and those are songs you can learn in 10 minutes (except for drums :P)

Time, or if you have a very talented female singer, try Great Gig in the Sky.
Not sure if a sig is a necessity.

I've heard a great cover of Great Gig with an alto sax replacing the vocals, and another with a guitar playing the vocal lines. It works pretty well and it's super easy to improvise on. Time is always a great choice.

I'd recommend some Michael Jackson. Beat It, Thriller or Billie Jean are always welcome.

Sum 41 - Motivation
Bad religion - **** you

what music do this audience mostly listen to?

Answer me this and you'll have your answer

Basically this, I play in a modern rock cover band. We do everything from No Use For A Name to Hip Hop rock party covers, based on the breakdown of

Location: (friends backyard, small intimate party, vfw hall etc.)
Audience: 18-25-40...?
Popularity of songs, current radio blah blah blah

At the school rock night we played we got everyone jumping with:
Fratellis - Chelsea Dagger
Jet - Are You Gonna Be My Girl
Blur - Song 2
Foo Fighters - Learn to Fly
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
But these are quite modern songs. Some older ones we did that were good were:
The Kinks - All Day and all of the Night
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Deep Purple - Black Night
Hendrix - Voodoo Child
