Hello, I have been playing the acoustic guitar for about 5 months. I think it's time to get a new electric guitar and an amp. I want to play mainly alternative rock like Nirvana, Pixies, etc. But, if I ever want to play classic rock, I want it to be able to do that too. Can you suggest an electric guitar for about $500-600 and an amp with multiple effects for about $300-400? P.S. I don't want a beginners guitar like a Squier. I want something I can have for a long time and be satisfied with once I get more advanced.

get a fender princeton 650, it's what I have and it's great with Nirvana, classic rock, really any type of music. And you can use it with an acoustic too so that's a nice bonus. I did a review on it if you want more info: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/reviews/guitar_amplifiers/fender/princeton_650/index.html

my personal review is at the bottom.

Both Peavey and Fender make good amps from what I hear so I'll have to look into those. Thanks guys.

Do you know what kind of guitar body you want? The 2 more popular designs are Strat & single cutaway Les Paul types. You can get a nice Epiphone Les Paul for about $500 and if you take care of it it will serve you we'll for almost all styles. It's heavy but it gives you more uumph.

Fender is the way to go if you want the strat body type. Plenty of nice bodies in your price range.

There are a bunch of good little amps with built in effects for $400. Here's one I tried the other day that was pretty cool. The Peavey Viper is also cool.

Good luck man!
