No one is truly free. We are all the subject of manipulations, be it institutional or biological.

True, if you're not allowed to choose irresponsibly then you are not externally free in that respect. However if you simply don't know how to choose responsibly, you aren't internally free at all.

Tell me about it. I can't believe that people give a **** all about being imprisoned or held at gunpoint or whatever. Like, you aren't really free anyway.

We are given information, with the internet we are given free information... It is up to us whether we will accept or reject it

I think people are thinking about this way to much on the concept of freedom. You know what freedom really is?

Me being able to go to a store and get shit for free.

Oh shit, wait no that's probably socialism.

Like women and their vaginas.

Imagine if women didn't have vaginas.

We'd still not have had built cars or the internet.

Bill Gates would never had started Microsoft if he got mad puthy in college.

In Socialism you can only get a certain amount for free, and you are really paying for it, just getting issued a certain amount of it given back to you

What an irrelevant comment. The thread obviously relates to philosophical freedom, not legal or other freedom/s and as such the conversation is to be held on philosophical grounds, not legal grounds. You're being rude and condescending because it suits you, not because it's warranted.

Exactly... You could make the argument that we aren't free because we can't just sprout wings and fly away, but it is really irrelevant and not funny so it's stupid thing to say... Thanks

I'm interested to hear how you would ensure absolute freedom for everyone.

consequences of your choices are what makes them wrong or irresponsible. you are free to do things, but may be swayed by what could happen. but the choice is still there to be made.

I don't really understand what we are trying to discuss

Impossible... If you legalized murder you would be giving the murderers freedom, but they would be harming their victims, thus taking away freedom from their victims... However, freedom can be maximized by making all things legal that do not have a victim on the other end or do not harm anybody else

I'm afraid that there wouldn't be much freedom left if you'd only legalize those things that do not harm others. There's also a lot of things that can indirectly cause harm (alcohol abuse for example), should those things be legal or illegal?

The general freedom of people (and their right to make dumb choices) should only go as far as to not effect anyone else negatively. For example, say an 18 year old has 7 children already at her age, and no financial stability to support them, no rich parents to lean back on, ect. Pretty dumb move, right? Well, she doesn't end up paying for her dumb move, everyone who's worked to achieve this stability pays her their tax money to support the kids she can't afford. Sometimes it's best to understand why certain freedoms (like having a shit load of kids at an early age) shouldn't be exercised, even though you could.
