What's the point of barring the first fret, when you could just press down the first and second string with your first finger, and third-fifth covered by other fingers?

What is the point of not barring the first fret ?

Different sounds man. Both are F Major chords. One is beefier for when you need a beefier sound. One is lighter for when you need a lighter sound.

Barring is a very basic technique. Failing to learn it will hinder your playing all around.

I was thinking play first 2 strings, and not the 5th so it'll be F again, and yeah, it's a good skill, but when I try it, my notes buzz...how exactly do I place my first finger?

A little bit sideways. And relax - remember you don't have to press down where your other fingers are fretting already. Your index finger really only needs to press down on the low E, B, and high E strings.
