Hi there!

I'm Vincent, Phd candidate in the field of Cultural Studies. I study the Straight Edge culture. I need to build up a list of Straight Edge bands and I thought you could help me. The list will also remain on this forum as a database for people looking for Straight Edge bands they don't know yet.

ps : I'm also looking for Straight Edgers willing to share their experience of the Straight Edge culture with me within the framework of an interview (or informal discussion). This would be an invaluable contribution to the thesis !

Thanks in advance !

Do you have any ideas as to what you're going to actually DO with an expert knowledge of straightedge "culture"?

Also hasn't it significantly declined at this point?
My band, Escher
My progressive rock project, Mosaic

I'd recommend changing your thesis topic

Just be happy this isn't another totally worthless thread in this sub forum.

I only have one contribution to this thread. "xBishopx"but they broke up in 2011. Never listened to them, but they were a side project of the lead singer from "Remembering Never" which was a band with straight edge members but not a straight edge band.

It's not the whole band, and he's no longer with the band, but Howard Jones who was the ex-vocalist for Killswitch Engage, is straight edge.

Well if you want to go with individuals, you might as well include the list that is on Wikipedia. James Hetfield is on there. I had to laugh a little, but I watched/read/can't remember/viewed non the less the interview someone was having with him and I felt that James presented his case very well.

He never claimed to be truly "straight edge." He said that he could never be because many people who really are have never touched drugs of any kind and that was definitely not the case with him. He said he was more like "born again straight edge" if anything simply because he is now sober and committed to staying that way for himself and his family. He even mentioned that it would be insulting to call himself a true "straight edge" due to his past and that it would misrepresent the idea of what "straight edge" stands for. This was just his way of sealing the deal kinda and to always remind him to stick with it.

James, your music is kinda terrible now, and it was better when you weren't sober, but that isn't what is important at this point. You gave us good years destroying your body and now you are taking care of yourself and your family which is extremely commendable.

Just my random little tid bit to add here cause why the hell not.

I don't see why he has to be "straightedge" instead of just "not doing irresponsible shit because he has a family."

Because it looks good in the music scene and even though I completely agree with you, it was slightly relevant to the topic which was being discussed here.

Just trying to keep the forum alive with some posts here ya know...

XLooking FowardX, Call to Preserve, XDeathstarX. I'm pretty sure there are other bands who are signed to Rise Records (or used to be) that are straight edge.

Hi guys,

Thanks for your remarks. Maybe we could just start a second list of "Straight Edge individuals".

@lookpizza : I couldn't find "Empty Houses" anywhere on the internet. Is it an active/recent sXe band?

@DamienEx1021 Who are the Straight Edge members in BTBAM?

@victor420 Thanks, list updated.
You included Ian MacKaye in the list. I guess he lives according to the Straight Edge principles but doesn't want to be labelled "Straight Edge" or "Father of Straight Edge". For that reason, I just added "often considered as the father of Straight Edge" in the list.

Do you know famous Straight Edge people outside the field of music?

BTBAM is a good straight edge band, I was wondering if anyone had information on when Paul Waggoner started playing guitar?
#27
Hey!

Thanks for your contributions.

@austinmack: sorry I couldn't tell when he started playing the guitar.

List updated.
