Hey guys. I have a question about my peavey classic 30, I just got it used for a little bit of nothing, it's one of the older ones but I'm having some problems with it. The clean channel is nice big and loud, but the gain channel has nearly no volume unless the pre and post are both at least 6. Anything wrong here?

Try some new pre amp tubes, it sounds like that is the problem.

JJecc83, mullard 12ax7 are good tubes to look at

+1 Robb

Also, try swapping some of the preamp tubes around and note any changes.

It 'could' be power tubes but the fact that the clean channel sounds fine leads me away from that.

Here is a vid I made that might help you a bit:

If it's a volume issue, I'd think it's more a power tube issue no? Though the cleans being fine is odd. Either way, TS, swap those out too. Should be the first bit of work you do on any used amplifier.
