But might buy one anyhow. Currently playing a SOVTEK MIG 100 with an Orange TH-30 as a backup. I'm thinking about picking up a JCM800 but heard good things about the DSL as well.
Budget is up to $2000USD, but would like to score something closer to $1000
I would be using it for full band jams, style is hard rock and funk. Used would be preferred just to save a few bucks.

thx

If you're thinking about a JCM, take a look at a Splawn Quickrod. Massively awesome hot-rod Marshall amp.

Yeah Splawn would be nice Krank 1980 is also worth a look

JCM2000 DSL100/50's go for $500-$600 all the time so that would be really cheap

Yea - Maybe I'll try to see if GC has Splawn or Krank that I could try out.
I remember seeing some negative reviews about krank around 7 years ago. Did they change anything or do you think that's just bad advice?

They have a 1980 in Sacramento.

they a few Splawns and several 1980's on the GC used site

ok - cool, what's the deal with Krank tho? Did you ever hear of any problems or have they always been solid?

Kranks are solid amps. But the company went out of business last year so no new amps are really hard to find

I got two carvin v3 stacks. Much love for them witb the factory options. You can get any color and even tweed for around 1300 for the head and 412 cab factory direct. Just get a good midi switcher, and a boss ns2, with xpattern cabling in loop 1, a vox time machine delay( with dummy plug in dry out) for loop 2, and maybe a tubescreamer into the front, and the dream is yours.

splawn quick rod EL34 (i have the same amp with KT88's)
may want to looke at an EL34 Nitro (i have the same amp just with KT88's)

they are great amps. i paid under a grand per head. in good condition. i think their prices on the used market may be working back up.

i have played the quick rod and i really like it i am just more of an the tone of the KT88's

i have never heard nor played a EL34 Nitro

top notch quality everywhere, great guys who build them and i love their amps.

In case you're wondering about the difference, the KT88 amps have an even bigger bottom end, along with a bit smoother distortion. The EL34 amps (well, I've only played the EL34 QR, I'm assuming the Nitro responds similarly) have a little grittier, snarlier midrange.

one thing i did notice is that the KT88's ring out much clearer. you hear every little detail, EL34's are grittier and more in the upper mid range, isn't quite as articulate, but all of the splawns i have played have ring very nicely very clean tones even with a ton of gain, you hear every note of the cord (and error) or lead.

The Sovtek looks nice, but they want $500 more than it's worth and 1/2 the power section is missing. I'd pass on that one

I figure all craigslist postings are subject to negotiation, but yeah - good catch.

Oh for sure, but when someone thinks they have a $1050 amp they most of the time will not negotiate to a reasonable price when $500ish is the reasonable price.

MIG's are awesome amps though

MIGs are nice for sure. I'd keep mine if it was a master volume model.

But, I would also pass on that one unless he'd cut the price in almost half.

i have the MIG50 and love it. i need new power tubes for it though. they are on the way with my new bias probe (weber biasrite).

i love my mig. but i am not sure how typical it is. i bought it from a tech. he showed me all new pots jacks and switches as well as all new good tube sockets, and filter caps. flawless work and it is mint. he is legit and respected, and i only paid $350ish its got EHX in the preamp thouogh, which he showed that every tube was brand new with a tube tester. kind of a nice deal. but it will go JJ at some point in time soon.

i have heard the 100, and i really liked it as well. i don't know why any of the MIG's get any attention. they are nice amps. but i wouldn't pay more than ~$500 unless it was like i got mine where you know that good work done and a check though.

It does have custom tolex, looks real clean and he says he has the extra tubes.

That said, I wouldn't pay $1050 for it either.

Things to consider with Sovteks:
* filter caps would probably need to be replaced
* stock transformers will require replacements sooner than later if they're still original
* prepare to get it serviced if they haven't seen a tech in years (I've seen several TGP, RT, and HC folks have the same issues above)
* In 2007-2008, the MIG-50s were $150 and MIG-100s were $250

I had a bunch of Migs 2007-2008 when they were dirt cheap. The 2 versions of both MIG-50s: one based on the Bassman which stays Clean at very loud volumes and the other based on the Plexi. Both I believe originally came with 2 5881s. The MIG-60 came stock with EL34s. The MIG-100 with 4 5881s can go really heavy.

I picked up my MIG 100H for $300 about 10 years ago. $1050 seems unreasonable so yea. Anyhow I love it but am seriously considering JCM2000 or Splawn just cuz I have a few extra bucks now.

*Warning* amps contain lethal voltages when unplugged

That reminds me, the plastic nuts are seriously bull shat! That the only thing that bugs me about it.
It seems like a 10mm ring but I can never find the correct thread size???

what happened to your thread?

What? Oh I lost track of the new amp point of the whole thing. Shit I was distracted by all the Sovtek attention. Anyhow I'm liking the prices of JCM2000 but hopefully will get a chance
to try Krank and Splawn out too.
