So stock the peavey windsor head is farty, buzzy, muddy and wont clean up in any settings. After rigerous tube swapping i found the perfect preamp tubes that polisb the turd. Now it is a great clean amp, loud and proud. When gain is cranked, it is a mid gain monster!
For v1- nos tung-sol 12ax7
for v2- nos tung-sol 12au7
for v3- nos GE blackplate 12aZ7(similar to at7)
stock ruby el34bstr power tubes

this thing finally cooks. Stock it sucked. Now it takes pedals well, and just so clean and loud.

Settings for clean-
master volume, resonance, presence, and texture all set to 3:00
bass 4, mid 6, treble 8, boost (on for fat low mids, off for less) its footswitchable anyway.
Preamp gain start all the way down, and slowly bring up till your volume is where u want it. Should be clean as a dogs ass.

Now if you dont have access to vintage tungsols or ge, any 12ax, AU, and AT should work just the same.
The real wierdo is the 12az7 that is nearly the same as the 12at7 but can handle about twice the power.

Many people hate the windsor, but if anyone has one, and hopes to achive great tones without modding it, give these tube types and settings a shot. You might just fall in love with it.
Turd polish success!

interesting. i don't recall ever played a windsor, but i haven't heard anything wonderful.

i think you have more invested in tubes than the amp ,

have you taken the pan out? i think at some point there were some mods for it. i have no idea, but maybe its worth doing some modding.

Put some JJ KT77/6Ca7's in the power section and you will get more clean headroom

There are lots of mods for the Windsor like the 2203 mod and the JMP mod (by swapping a few components you will have either circuit)

JJ 6CA7's sound really nice when you push them hard too. That's what I've got in my JCM900.
JJ EL34L's are what you should have in there though IMO. I've got those in my Randall, they're shit hot. Big, big sound.

I have a set of the JJE34L and I have yet to try them in any of my amps. How do they compare to SED EL34's cath? Because that is what I'm running in my JCM2000 and I really like them.

Well i have yet to buy new power tubez, but when i do, im goin 6ca7 for all my amps. Big bottles are neato lol. Actually i got all those preamp tubes for 9 dollars. I raped them from an old record player i bought on facebook. and i have looked into modding the piss out of it, but have found that what ive done so far is great. Chinese power tubes or not. I traded my fender rumble 100 for the windsor halfstack, so it was a ****in steal. Now if i could only learn how to remove that noisy texture control. I noticed that that is why there is a low hum. Any specific info on it would be great if anyone knows anything.
