Pretty sure no one actually plays live at the super bowl anymore

Not even the players.

Considering how people at football games are presumably there for the football and not the music, they can get away with miming their songs, excluding the vocals.

At a huge event like the Superbowl that's watched by millions of people you don't want any technical mishaps to mess up the show so miming nullifies any potential problems.

That's how I see it anyhow.

That said though no one really cares.

This^

I can't blame them. Plus it's not like they are taking credit for someone else's work. They recorded everything before hand and then just pretended to play it live.

Also on freezing nights, playing is a bitch and will warp the sound. A tweet Flea sent out said they had no choice which makes me think they were told not to plug in. miming a song does not seem like an RHCP thing to do.
#14
Yeah RHCP probably really wanted to do it live but were told they couldn't for live mixing reasons etc.

I thought Josh looked like he was milking it a bit. I mean, I know he has a tendency to flail his guitar around, but he looked like he was trying to break the thing across his pelvis.

Also, there's another article on that site which claims the whole show (and mostly Bruno Mars) was mediocre. Screw that. The halftime who was the only part of the Super Bowl I watched and Bruno's performance really improved my perception of him.
#18
Yeah, RHCP were probably forced to do it by the NFL, because if something went wrong it would cost them millions. Bruno's bass player said super bowl half time shows have always been like this.

It was about 30-35 degrees F and raining a bit. I would think it would be really hard to play anything in that.

A band hasn't player plugged in at the Super Bowl in yeaaaaaars. Even in the boring post nipslip when it was tom petty and Springsteen; they played over backing tracks. This is because they can't sound check in that short amount of time and a single technical error could cost the network millions.

The difference between Bruno Mars' band and Rhcp is that Rhcp didn't hide it.

I think Maiden win the award for "best way to screw with the forced miming."

It's a production thing. It's pre-recorded so that things are mixed correctly, there aren't any problems with instruments, etc.
