I currently have a Marshall HDFX 100w half stack (4x12 Celestion speakers)...Pretty much, everyone is telling me to upgrade the amp..I am currently having problems with some distortion pedals sounding terrible though it (The Joyo US Dream). I am on a tight budget. I have been looking at the Peavey Valveking....Any insight on that amp is appreciated. I was wondering if I could just replace the cab of my Marshall for now because of my financial situation...Would that make much difference? I would still have the same head. My budget is under $500 for a new Half-stack (Used is fine). Even less if I am just replacing the cab. I play in a Grunge/Alternative band, so I need that heavy sound...(Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Bush, STP, Pumpkins, Silverchair...) I also gig with the band frequently...I also need good cleans as well...I like to go from clean to distortion quite often....Any suggestions on an amp is appreciated...Also, my guitar is an Epiphone Firebird with Alnico Classic pickups as well. Thank you.

P.S. I am in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Pennsylvania area.

You might want to put where you are located at also.

I'd get a a new amp and cab but the amp would be first. What type of speakers are in the cab?

Did a search on Ebay and found this. Since you're on a tight budget this might be a good head for you, and get a cab later once you get more cash. It will sound way better than your current amp. You won't need your distortion pedals. But you might want to invest in an overdrive to boost your tone a bit for the heavier stuff.

Also another amp to look at would be a used Laney IRT60 if you can find one.

Peavey Triumph 60 - $200 http://www.guitarcenter.com/In-Store-Used-USED-PEAVEY-TRIUMPH-60-HEAD-109476699-i3374175.gc I don't know much about this amp, though I think it's a predecessor to the Ultra. Old.

Peavey VK100 - $250 http://www.guitarcenter.com/In-Store-Used-USED-PEAVEY-VALVE-KING-HD-109915165-i3634262.gc This distortion on this amp is a good sound for the genres you want to play, IMO. It's about the only thing the gain does well, I think. I used to own a VK212.

Sadly, it's tough to check out amps because there are maybe four music shops within a fifty-mile-radius of me. I hate to go off of Youtube videos, but it's pretty much my only option...Plus, the music shops rarely have really low-priced amps.

I think an important question to add is whether you want a tube amp or a solid-state amp. The Marshall and Crush are both solid-state, the Randall is tube... I think the general consensus in the guitar world is that pedals sound better through tube amps... also, if you're modeling your tone after your favorite bands, how about considering one of those amps? Look at the amps that the bands you listed used to achieve a specific sound for a song. It's tricky to replicate studio tones, but at least it's a good start.
Epi Sheraton II or MIA FSR strat > wah Q535 > fuzzface > Keeley C4 > Qtron > Whammy > Liquid Chorus > Triboost > Hotcake > BigMuff > Small Stone > VolumePlus > SpaceEcho > Cathedral Reverb > LoFi > MemoryMan > BYOC vibrato > DD-7 > Vox AC15 C1

Yeah, that has been a reason why I have been looking at the Peavey Valveking....Sadly, I can not find it anywhere where I can play it. I don't want to model my sound after anyone...I'm more-less using it as a reference for everyone. I also have heard that tube is much better for cleans....I can't say I have a preference between solid or tube. I'm pretty open. Maintenance wise....I'd say solid would be best...

I actually think a ValveKing would be a great choice for you and the sound you want.

Since you said you prefer Solid State. This one is a hybrid but at least you wont have to replace the power tubes, just the pre-amps which is easy. Great price also.

I see. I mentioned that one because they usually sell for a lot more than what that guy is asking for it. Maybe you can go test out his to see if you like it and maybe get the acoustic after..

Also I would offer the lowest price you can get it at..

Unless that head is Fortin modded I call fall advertising on that one. That is one of the old and (apparently not so popular) Diavlos before Fortin joined Randall and redesigned the whole line. Randall RD45 would be the Fortin one and (apparently) great bang for the buck for a new all tube heads.

Yeah I posted the clip of the same head for the one on Ebay. I've been checking out those Diavlo's for a while now but the RD45 would be out of the price range for him. They sound pretty good from what I've seen of them.

I've really been digging the Jet City heads....Any word on those? For now, it seems to be a toss up between the ValveKing and the JCA Jet City.

Of course, if at half the price the Peavey can get close to the Jet City, I would rather the Peavey for price purposes.

That JCM900 SL-X is an awesome amp, if you can get by with no clean channel you should get that.

Also look for a used Marshall JCM2000 DSL 50 or 100

I checked out the JCM900 SL-X. It sounds great. I just need a good clean as well. A lot of my songs go from clean to distortion, back to clean, etc...This person seems to get a great clean out of theirs, but I guess you have to do a lot of balancing in order to achieve that... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxmfHILUbrA

The Ultra would definitely be an awesome option if you need quick switches between clean and distortion. Doesn't have as nice an OD as the SL-X, but is multi channel and much cheaper. Would leave budget for a decent cab too.

I don't need a really great OD channel. I have distortions that I like to use on my pedal board. I basically need something with a great tone, great clean, and can handle a good amount of distortion.

I'd look for an amp that had nice gain as well as cleans than using distortion pedals. You can always sell off your pedals to add funds for a better amp.

I checked out the Peavey Ultra 60...While it does have a nice OD, the clean channel is not that impressive...It's pretty similar to my HDFX. (Given, I am going off of Youtube videos....) I'd like to find out more information on the Jet City, JCM900, and the Peavey Valveking. Price wise, the Valveking hangs around $250. The Jet City is sitting around $500...The JCM is also around $500. The Jet City seems to have great cleans. I can not find many clean videos for the Valveking...I believe the JCM900 was the one that you had to really balance the tone for a clean sound....(That might cause hassle)

I will have to see if I can find more clean videos for the Ultra. So far, I have only watched one, but it does not have the best clean tone....(Maybe it is their microphone, recording equipment, etc....) I hate to have to go off of Youtube videos.....

Might as well forget the JCM900, you'd probably have it for a month then want to sell it. A lot of people like the Jet City's for the price. There are better sounding amps but come with a higher price tag. You want to spend as much as you can on the amp, it's basically your most important piece to your sound. And your band will appreciate it also...

Try some of the other amps suggested if you can before making an impulse buy. Nothing wrong with getting used gear, that's how you get better stuff for cheaper. If you wanted to get a good cab also, I would suggest Avatar cabs, great price for great build and speakers. You can customize it to your liking also. Get a better head first of course..
