I've been lately considering a fuzz. Was thinking could possibly DIY? Looking for something along the lines of a rat. I am also looking to build small as possible, say 2/3 the size of a boss pedal?

Would this be possible, for a first time builder? Just like the idea of the project if I'm honest, don't especially 'need' a fuzz right now.

Fuzz circuits are real simple - one transistor or one opamp, basically its just a pre-amp with diodes in the feedback loop (as a 70's MXR) or across output (see diagram in link) - you get different tones depending mainly which diodes you use. Certainly you can get one in the size you want.

Check Ebay "DIY Fuzz Pedal"....plenty of kits on there perfect for first time DIY projects.

Interesting, cheers for the responses! While i'm on the subject, what about the same for a delay? Will the circuit be bigger and harder to build? Thinking of buying a TC flashback, but if I can make my own fuzz for cheap, that'd be cool.

oh and what you mentioned about ebay:

looks decent, and really cheap too!

I ordered one of those a couple of months ago. I gave it to my buddy, who's really into electronics, to build. It doesn't work. I'm not sure if he ****ed it up or if the components are faulty. He's built his own pedals from scratch before, without using kits. Thought I should warn you.

Building a delay would be a bit too advanced for beginners. I would stick to fuzz for right now, in my opinion.

cheers for the heads up. Interesting that they don't come standard with something for a PSU cable..
