i may be posting in the wrong forum but just in case, i went to another one (tab talk) and put this there also. so yeah sorry if im in the wrong place. this also might be a dumb question entirely, but oh wells

i just started working on this tab people have been requesting, "Before the Damned" by all that remains and im pretty much done except one part: that insane solo from 2:08-2:19. ive been improvising along with it, and have gotten to the point where i can play it, save an off note here and there.

so my question for everyone here is, can anybody tell me what scale this guy uses? im not good with that kind of thing, and if i have an idea of the EXACT notes hes building his solo from i can get this tab done right quick.

in case it helps, heres a riff and a couple of chords to show you some the notes i have for sure. thanks for any help

1/2 of chorus...

eb|-------------------------------------------------------|
Bb|-------------------------------------------------------|
Gb|---------5----------------5/7-------------------------|
Db|-------3---8---------(3)-3/5---5--------------------|
Ab|-----5-----8---(0-1)---------x-5---(5-5-5-5-5-5)-|
Db|-0---------8------------------x-5---(5-5-5-5-5-5)-|

chords from verse

eb|-------------------------------|
Bb|-------------------------------|
Gb|-------------------------------|
Db|--7------3-----4-------1----|
Ab|--5------1-----2-------1----|
Db|----------------4-------1----|

It's in Db minor, which would played the same as D minor is on a guitar in drop d. It sounds like he's also mixing in the major 7th from the harmonic minor, as well as the tritone, which are both really common.

Ok...so get to listening. If you need to, download some software that slows songs down. The exact scale he is using probably isn't as important as the notes being played AND how those notes are played. Not that the scale isn't important, but really it's not as important as that other stuff.

^^^ VLC media player too.

Yea, that was what I was thinking of.. couldn't remember the name. That's my favorite. Especially since you can stream youtube videos.

The solo actually contains every note, but uses licks from blues, minor (nat & dble harm), phrygian, utilising augmenteds and chromatics... depending on where you are in the solo... the list could go on depending on your outlook.

Personally i'd just call it minor / phrygian with a few augmented triads, but that's me!

If that frustrates ya and you wanted exacts, well I did you the honour of tabbing it out for ya and you can use the bruce lee method ("keep what is useful and reject what is useless") albeit depending on your style there are a number of places you could make those runs work, so as bruce says, experiment with what you think makes best sense, after all it's gonna be your Tab.

Hope it helps!
