I'm just returning to playing guitar in general, and 12 string in particular, after a short gap of 43 years... In the late 60s, I'd thought of the idea of fitting the two top pairs with slightly different diameter strings to maybe get a "shimmer" from the different tensions and string qualities. I used to tune the two top pairs slightly out, but had always wondered if a similar effect could be obtained with the differing string diameters. Has anyone ever tried it? I'll probably try it anyway (we have another rehearsal next Sunday) and will post the results, good or bad, here. I'd be interested whether anyone has done this, by design or necessity (after a string break) and whether it would be worth experimenting.
I never got round to trying (not enough time to experiment) back when I used to play before.
