Noob at tube amps here.

Is this okay to run? What do I have to do at the back of the head? Change it to 16ohm or keep it at 8? On the cab it is 8 ohm per side, does this mean a total of 16 for the head or still just 8?

How do I use effects loops also (lol)

Also I'm not keeping the cabinet, i just got a deal of the head so i impulse bought it. gonna get a mesa or something with V30's

If it were to be used mono, it would be 4ohm.

Then that's what the amp has to be switched to to use that input.

So I should use mono as opposed to plugging both of the cords in to both the cab and the head (Stereo)? would you mind further explaining this to me?

Those two outputs on the back of the amp are connected in parallel. Where it splits doesn't matter; back of the amp, inside the cab, doesn't matter. Using the mono input on the cab saves on one speaker cable. With your setup that's the only difference. If you used two cables you would still set the amp to 4. Electrically both ways are identical.

Thank you. Right now the cab is making a hum when I turn on the head from standby mode. Will this end up being detrimental or cause something to short out? Could it be some sort of other internal problem? Am I best off bringing it to my local music shop to solve this?

Sorry for all the questions.

So the best way to solve this is a noise gate?

You can minimise it with the right selection of tubes but most guys just chuck a noise gate in the loop.

Stick a JJ ECC803 in V1. It will help. They sound good too.

Any recommendations for the other 3? or stick to 12ax7 for them?

I like JJ everywhere in those. JJ ECC83S in the other spots.
ECC83 is just the international standards designation for 12AX7. The S on the end is just a JJ code that means something to them.

You could run a JJ ECC803 in V2 as well if you want to spend the cash but most of the noise reduction happens at the first stage in the chain. ie V1. The 803 is a very nice sounding tube as well though so ....... whatever

lol

Sorry, but yeah, listen to Cath, he knows what he's talking about.

I've owned a 5150 and a 6505 in the past. They are just really ****ing noisy. They are not very well designed amps in the first place.

Get a JJ ECC803 in the first preamp tube slot, it actually does help. You'll probably want a noise gate in the loop.
