Question in title. Going down my instagram feed just results in a lot of people showing off their meals/clothes/new jewelery and stuff.

Whilst people are perfectly entitled to show off their new stuff I often feel like it's just a contest of showing off who has the nicest food, the most expensive stuff, the biggest TV. Surely there is more to life than showing off your stuff on social networks?

Surely there is more to your friends' lives than just what they show off on Instagram?

Why is that, when someone shows off something they may have worked hard for, suddenly showing off on Instagram is their whole life?

EDIT: To elaborate on the above:

Money can't buy happiness.
Money DOES create an environment that fosters happiness.
You either know how to be happy or you don't.
If you know how to be happy, having money will help you be happy.
If you don't, it won't.

Money can't buy you happiness, but I'd much rather cry in a Lambo than a Ford Escort.

or a cardboard refrigerator box

edit: there are some people who get expensive things only as a status symbol, or only because other people have them. and then there are others who get them because it makes them happy, apart from the other bullshit. some people spend $400 on a meal so they can be seen as Thomas Keller's restaurant and say they've enjoyed the tasting menu, and some people do it because they have money and are willing to spend it on the things they really enjoy.

There's nothing wrong with being proud of something you worked hard for, but there is something wrong when people use their material items to define who they are as a person.

Too much? That's not for me to decide, but I do think some are to the extent where it brings them down a bit and they really do forget about a lot of things they'd love doing.

i took a class on globalization a little while ago, and this girl had to speak about the effect trans-national corporations had on globalization, and who the winners and losers were. she asked the question: "is a nice pair of shoes worth all the agony and suffering happening at places like Foxconn?" not only did she frame the question that way, but she even said YES.

It's a Bluetech model. Totally economic. Ish. 40mpg. Shut up.

To be fair, the company isn't hurting for money, especially since my team recently nailed a multimillion pound international contract, and I convinced a major dealership network to service our vehicles for 25% less than our current arrangement.

I feel like a fair amount of people work extensively just to be able to buy things, things that they probably don't need, when they could be using their time doing something beautiful and gaining joy from actual experiences and not material possessions. But then again people are entitled to live their life however makes them happy and I probably shouldn't judge.

On the flip side, money might not buy happiness but I'm pretty sure poverty doesn't.

Why is being materialistic a bad thing if it's not at the exclusion of other things?

And insta is a pretty bad way to judge people's lives. I spend most of my time studying or sleeping but obviously I don't put pics of that all the time because it's boring
cat
#36
Yes. But I don't think that they're materialistic, I think that most people need to have total approval of their peers.
#37
Money can't buy happiness? Of course it can. Money alone can't buy happiness. But it's an important factor to have. Financial stability is good. Buy things you want that make you happy if you want or whatever, if it brings people together then good.
#38
Yeah it's horrible. Thankfully I'm completely detached from materialistic greed
