The way TS is saying it he makes it sound like having some disability or disease or something. It's such a bad thing so he only lets his friends know that he plays an instrument. Wouldn't want that kind of information spreading around, after all.

inb4 will and snazz agree with that

You kidding me? That I'm a piano virtuoso is the least interesting thing about me.

At university, everyone asks what program you're in, so being in music, it's kind of unavoidable.
#11
I mean, if they ask or if it is super relevant (like if I am inviting people to a show or if we're talking about playing instruments). Otherwise no because I have terrible stage fright and I don't want people to ask me to play something

I only really bring it up if it comes up in conversation. I don't strut about saying "I play a guitar, I'm a guitar player" yeah, me and just about everyone else

You think that's bad, I have a chain with DT's Majesty logo on it. I don't always wear it, but when I do, it's *always* under the shirt.

EDIT: ^^^ Exactly that. Only if asked.
#18
No. Unless people ask me, or if the topic of conversation is on guitars.

Been doing a music related course for 2 years, and a couple of my friends only just found out I play guitar.
My best friend there managed to keep his grade 8 piano skills hidden for most of that time too.

Well who can't agree to that?

Who wants to be that annoying metalhead kid who has to rub his music and the fact he plays guitar into everyone's face at every given second, constantly forcing it to be center of discussion?

Example:

"Hey my name is ___ and I play guitar!"

"Did I mention I play guitar?"

"Hey let me tell you about my technical-progressive-thrash band that's actually another shitty metalcore band for the 100th time and tell you all the shitty stories about it!"

"Did I mention I play guitar?"

When I meet people I usually say, "Hi I'm Mitch. I enjoy playing guitar, drums and with myself." and offer a handshake.

Nope. If I get asked, "What are some of your hobbies?" or "What did you do this weekend?", then I would mention something like "I enjoy reading novels, playing guitar, hanging with my fiancee" or "I played guitar for a bit. Chilled out. You know.../shrug".

Meh, I don't rub it in the face, but when talking about music, it takes a few minutes to realise who's playing music and who isn't, so no need to "hide" it.

And there are clearly > 50% of people playing music around me, you don't show of by saying you also play an instrument (workin in a IP firm, attracts a lot of people interested in art :p)
#29
No, because if they ask me to play something I'll look like a cunt when they realise I can actually barely play the guitar.

No because if I do, no one gives a shit, and when I do happen to have a guitar on me they want me to play a song i've never even heard of.

I'd rather keep my musical prowess to myself, to avoid any awkward interpretations on how I go about my hobbies.

I don't go out of my way to tell people, but it invariably comes up when someone asks 'what do you like to do?' when getting to know me, since music is a huge part of who I am

...no, i haven't. ever. maybe your just an overgeneralizing douchebag, eh?

inb4 lawl ur a f4gautisticaspiemetulhedtard (typical of you just like the post quoted above) - because i play acoustic, and i don't tell anyone about it really.

now go stick a dick in a dog (eg. your mum) because that's about the only action you'll probably ever get. unfortunately that means if you procreate your children are approx. 99.99999% likely to have a single-digit IQ

Unless I'm asked what my hobbies are, I'll never just openly tell anyone I play an instrument. It's kind of awkward for some reason.

People who don't play guitar are not interested in hearing about guitars--aside from that they probably don't know anything about guitar and couldn't have a good conversation about it. If I met someone who I presumed to be a musician (based on something he said or I observed) I might bring it up.

But I probably wouldn't talk about playing guitar, rather I'd ask him what kind of guitars and gear he has and his experiences with them and such.

But even then most people you meet who through some way or another reveal that they "play guitar" don't even know the model of their own guitar let alone have opinions about the varieties of nerdy guitar stuff I like to talk about, or they cop out with some ridiculous line like 'I dunno man I just play acoustic'.
Listen. I'm sorry.
