I am thinking about trying out for my school's jazz band, but I don't know a lot of jazz to play. I was wondering what songs would help me the most for understanding how to play jazz.

anything by John McLaughlin especially his stuff with Mahavishnu Orchestra, although might not be pure enough for the jazz "purists".

Learning how to play jazz takes a lifetime but improvisation and knowing how to read notes/chords certainly is key.

That being said, Autumn leaves is probably a good place to start

For a Jazz Band?
Benson is what they will want to hear. Credible comping and a solo when asked.
