Survey link at the bottom for anyone who just wants to do it quickly.

This is part of one of my modules for my Masters. I have elected to do a case study on genre classification, and I am hoping to gather information from a variety of people regardless of musical taste. For this reason I won't state what the genre is here in the OP, as I do also want responses from people who know nothing about it.

So yeah, if you have five minutes or so please help me out by filling this in: http://kwiksurveys.com/s.asp?sid=ntjr3ebx6ruw08n342764

Also, as the website I did the survey on won't let me add a text box at the end for additional comments, feel free to post any additional comments in this thread for me to use.

Thanks in advance.

When I was writing the questions the two that I had to look up to make sure they actually existed were Teutonic Thrash Metal and Pornogrind.

dude, pornogrind is awesome. I don't even consider it music, but it's so funny

edit:

before ya'll "metal is brootalz" comment about me not consider it being music. I mean come on. The lyrics are crap, the drumming so bad, the band names are ridiculous, the gutturals are so low you can barely even hear them, and the guitar playing just distorted crap, not technicality or actual talent is put into them.

Djent is seriously awful. Like everything about it is fundamentally immoral.

Why are Metalcore, Mathcore, Nintendocore, Melodic Metalcore, and Unblack Metal on this list? The first four are Hardcore (HARDCORE IS NOT METAL -- despite how great it is and how much I enjoy it), and Unblack Metal is just a bullshit term that idiots came up with for bands who are "Christian Black Metal". (Why we need to have specific genres because it's Christian is beyond me, and I say this as someone who is by no means anti-religious.) Also, Christian Metal isn't really a genre for the same reason as Unblack Metal.

I'm not even sure what "Dark Metal" is... wikipedia says it's a Death/Doom album by the band Bethlehem. lel

A few of your "Djent" bands aren't even Djent. They just use guitar tones that people mistake for Djent. But I can see why you put them in the list, since people usually mistakenly bring them up when Djent is brought up.

So...there, you're welcome, TS.

Harcore mixed with electronic 8-bit inspired music = Nintendocore. AKA "the subgenre of Hardcore that all the Hardcore kids mock".

I agree about the Unblack Metal and Christian Metal bit but I wanted to keep things neutral and I lifted every sub genre from a Wikipedia page.

I have to disagree about the -core ones though, you are basically saying Dillinger, August Burns Red and Killswitch aren't metal. Metalcore is a combination of metal and hardcore, which is why I consider it to be a genre of metal as well as a genre of hardcore. Anyway, I included them for the same reason I included the Unblack and Christian ones.

Well I would say all of them at least contain elements of djent. Sure, Born of Osiris, Veil of Maya and After The Burial may have been around before the djent thing really kicked off, but they definitely have elements of it in their sound regardless of what came first. My reasons for picking those bands in particular is they are the top 20 list from GotDjent.com, which I figured was a pretty solid starting point for exploring the genre.

Thanks for all the replies guys!

Well, that's kind of fair. Just be aware that wikipedia is generally terrible as far as genre lists go.

Dillinger isn't Metal. They're Mathcore, which is a subgenre of Hardcore. Just because it has heavy guitars doesn't make it metal. DEP fits the definition of this more than the definition of Heavy Metal. Their sound is also more Hardcore-based than Metal-based.

Metalcore is a combination of metal and hardcore, which is why I consider it to be a genre of metal as well as a genre of hardcore.

This is Metalcore:

Notice the distinctive Hardcore vibes to it? Yeah, that's what Metalcore is.

Hardcore and Metal have influenced each other the last several decades. But both have very distinctive feels to them. The easiest way to begin telling the difference between Metalcore and Metal is to begin listening and getting a feel for the two. The Hardcore forum still has a decent thread on quintessential Metalcore. That forum also has an educational thread that discusses the difference between bands like Killswitch and bands like Shai Hulud or Botch...basically, the difference between a lot of bands mistakenly labeled "Metalcore" and what Metalcore actually is.

I would say that the bolded (along with SikTh and Meshuggah) were influences on early Djent. But they're not Djent themselves. Both Born of Osiris and Veil of Maya are Deathcore. The problem is that Deathcore shares some characteristics with Djent, so it's easy for people to think they're the same. Careful listening reveals there's definitive structural and compositional differences.

It's kind of like how Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple influenced early heavy metal but weren't heavy metal themselves. (Although, they do have a few songs that sound like early heavy metal, 90% of their music was just hard rock.)

If something is a combination of two things, it really isn't either of those things. A liger is neither a lion nor a tiger, jazz fusion is neither jazz nor rock, water is neither oxygen nor hydrogen, etc. Each of these things exists as a separate entity from its various elements, and while though its elements do of course influence its traits, each is its distinguishable thing that is not interchangeable with its elements (anyone that has ever tried breathing water (since it is made from oxygen) can tell you this.
There's no such thing; there never was. Where I am going you cannot follow me now.

So why don't you two go to the metal forum and circle jerk about what's metal and what isn't there.

The rest of us can just say whether something is good or bad.

That analogy is absurd. With elements on the periodic table or species with different genetics then the differences between two are very black and white. We are talking about music genres, which is a very blurry area. When I said I consider Metalcore to be a genre of metal, that is my view which can be debated as Sam did. If I were to say water is oxygen then of course I would be wrong. You cannot be wrong about something as loose as music sub genres on the same level as animal species. Saying "Dillinger are Metal" is not the same as saying "This cat is a dog".

And I do care Sam, thanks for your reply!
#35
i like referring to all the sub genres of metal as just metal.
