Looking to start replacing tubes or having some back ups around. Any recommendations for tubes for a Mesa Single Rec.? I don't believe switching brands from Mesa stock to another brand (e.g. JJs, TungSol) require biasing, which I really would like to stay away from rebiasing the amp. Also, if anyone has had any experience with putting "x" tube in a specific spot that works well that would be appreciated. Just looking to gather info. Thanks in advance guys!

I like JJ's personally. SED winged C's are a really nice power tube. JAN phillips are also nice. You can try a 5751 or 12at7 in V1, makes amps a little clearer to my ears when running high gain, seems slightly more articulate. A balanced 12at7 for the phase inverter is something else to try out. Really just buy a few here and there and experiment.

mesa amps do not have a bias adjustment pot, you just stick the power tubes in and your done. However mesa tubes are picked for certain spec's so they are the bias Mesa wanted in the amp. Mesa tubes and Groove Tubes are selected in the same way so either works to factory spec's. You can use any tubes you want just be aware of this. SED are great, but $100+ for two 6l6 and $80+ for two el34

For the pre-amp, I'd get a few different tubes and see what works best where. JJ ecc83/803, Mullard 12ax7, Sovtek 12ax7lps are all decent and fairly cheap

I remember reading that Mesa did this to match what there desired intent was for the amp, I have also heard that Mesa stock tubes are just rebranded. I have not been let down with JJs so far, I think those are generally the safe bet. So far you guys just overloaded my brain on options. Many thanks.

Yes Mesa only rebrands tubes, so does Groove Tubes and Ruby tubes

Just thought of this, but is it alright to mix tube brands, not values but brands? I figured as long as I stay with 12ax7s or 6l6s the brand would be irrelevant I will keep the power tubes matched though.

I don't have much experience with Mesas but I do know that a lot of people swear by the 9th generation Shuguang preamp tubes in Rectos. You can identify them by the code, the 9th gens are 12AX7C. Stay away from 12AX7A and 12AX7B, especially the A's. If you see any Chinese 12AX7C they are usually 9th gen Shugs. Most rebranding outfits seem to keep the suffix intact.
They seem to have gotten their shit together with the 9th gens. It took them a while but the Chinese tube has finally arrived. The high gain boys seem to love 'em.

You can email the people at valvequeen.com and they will recommend tubes for the sound you're looking for and put a set together for you. I've used them for retubing my amp and they really steered my towards some good stuff for my Line 6.

Thanks for the heads up on the, dare I say, Chinese tubes. I am not in need of a retube yet, but better safe than sorry, not to mention experimenting has its perks.
