I'm looking for a good reliable head for about $500, a little bit more wont hurt, i'd prefer a tube over solid state. I play mainly metal and rock, so i'd like to be able to go from a simple crunch to the heaviest of the heavy. But the perfect sound for me would be something like Megadeth in the early 90s. Any suggestions?

Clue: amplifiers amplify so don't turn it on if you need quiet.

Theres currently a new Laney IRT60h on ebay at $500. Thats a whole lot of amp at that price.

the Jet City JCA50h is also a great amp that does metal and rock quite well at $500. Only problem you might have is that it has more of a modern american tone than the marshall tone megadeth used.

JCM 900s and JCM2000s are highly underappreciated and can be had for 500-550. I've actually seen a few JCM900s SLX's go in the 450-500 range. If you like the recto sound a Mesa Single Rec should run around 600.

You get a lot for the money in these amps.

Krank 1980/Chadwick. Look at GC used, they pop up there cheap pretty often.

All good suggestions so far. I have a JCM 900 and a Krank 1980. The 1980 will get a bit heavier. Be warned, it has a bit of its own thing going in the midrange, some like it, some hate it.

Hard to EQ, I haven't quite gotten it how I want it yet, but I know it's in there. I like it though.

Yeah, the sweep and presence make it a little difficult. The clean channel is pretty nice even with only a bass and treble.

The clean is awesome, love it. It seems like it likes the presence extremely low, otherwise it gets harsh quick.

well the sweep effects the eq parameters quite a bit depending on where it is set.
