After having a used Peavey 5150 212 crap out on me and going crazy from not having a proper amp to play for several weeks/months (I can't stand playing modelers through headphones) I decided it was time for a new amp, and finally, a proper cab to accommodate future amp heads!

Having heard plenty of clips and watching mic'd videos of the 5150 III, I pretty much knew what to expect. It's now here and it hasn't disappointed. I now have the clean channel I want without sacrificing my metal tones. I was pleasantly surprised by the Blue/Crunch channel and how versatile I can make it just by switching my OD on and off. It might be the best channel on the entire amp.

The 5150 III is working insanely well as a late night practice amp. Super quiet without a lot of tone being sacrificed. I haven't tried the headphone out on it. If someone requests it, I'll plug my ATH-M50s in and see what happens. I'm not a fan of headphones so I'll either find it acceptable or just completely hate it.

I've heard people say the Red/Lead channel is a more refined 5150 tone. I don't think they were far off. Whether or not that is a good thing is a matter of opinion. I like to think of the 5150 III as a gentleman wearing a top hat and monocle while he eats a steak with a proper fork and knife. While the older 5150 is more like a predator that just rips the flesh from its prey with its fangs and eats it raw.

Both of those sound amazing...

I was really surprised that I didn't need to push the Lead channel with my OD, unlike my older 5150 212. Though it is still fun to boost it anyways. Just depends on what I'm trying to get out of it. Nice to hear that it is quieter than my old 5150 combo, though that really means nothing when you're actually playing the amp...

I really like the included footswitch. The purple light for the effects button is really pretty (lol?), just a shame I have no use for it right now. I'm considering a multi-effects in the future. Maybe an Eventide H9. I don't want to build a pedalboard.

The cab ended up being a surprise. I really knew nothing about it, other than it is PRS, has a stupid and possibly dirty-sounding name, closed-back, and has V30s in it. The store I was set on ordering from doesn't stock Mesa, so no Mesa 212 Recto cab for me, sadly. The PRS 212 Deep Back "Big Mouth" (yes, seriously) was a tiny bit cheaper than the Orange 212 closed-back. So I gambled with it and I'm glad it I did.

The 5150 III's cleans are more than adequate for me through the cab and my metal tones are stupidly tight, just like I wanted. The cab is supposed to be larger than your average 212, but I cannot confirm since I have no reference. Saw one guy claiming it sounds similar to his Mesa Recto 212. It just simply sounds great to me. I can't complain.

I apologize if the pictures aren't too great. Did what I could with an iPad 3 camera. Nothing is plugged in because I decided to move the amp across the room for some better natural light. I have this Japanese screen blocking most of the window, right behind where the amp would sit. Has pretty flowers painted on it. Brutal.

Here's a baby Ella in confusion as I tell her to sit in front of the amp.

Summary in no particular order and some of it isn't even included in the previous text so I guess it really isn't a summary I just wanted to make a bullet list:

  • I would like some effects.
  • Shame there is no reverb.
  • Top hats and monocles.
  • PRS cab blowjob jokes.
  • Chug chug chug.
  • LEDs are pretty.
  • I need a 6 string.

I have a problem and have already been thinking about a second amp head to put on top of the new cab. Was thinking of a GH50L or maybe some kind of Splawn or Orange. Feel free to suggest anything. I'm not picky. I just like tone.

HNAD.

The 5150 III is pretty killer, though I've never tried the 50 watt version.

I think you're good on the American high gain stuff, if I were you, I'd go Splawn Quickrod for the super rich Brit tones and get a 6 string with a flat mounted floyd. Then your circle of VH tones could be complete.

I'll have to put the Classic T models on my to-try list. Shame the finish options there are Anachronism Gold, Nuclear Waste and Aged Clown, because in principle the plaintop is right up my alley.

Presumably because the CCF (Combined Corksniffing Forces) of MLP and Gibson forums would rise up against them, plunging the land into war.

Thanks... xD

I'll get some more dog photos sometime!

Was thinking of a sort of "Brit" tone for my second amp. Kinda wanting a Mastodon tone.

Nice! This one's still on my list to try again. I think maybe I wasn't so impressed with it the first time because I played a black one... I mean, being white should make it at least 20% better, right?

It's a good thing we're talking about amps... cause that would sound REALLY bad in another context...

<insert racist joke here>
